Backlinking, just as important today as it was last year??

Hey all,
I have not really worked much on SEO lately, literally in about a year or so as I've been working hard on my ebay biz. However, I want to get back into IM.

Last year back linking got really big.. with Angela and Paul's links and all that. I bought into it, but didn't really get big into it.

Before I start back linking again, I want to know if it is still just as good, or will I be wasting my time. If so, what should I focus on now?

Thanks!

Google changed some of their algorithms (some more points to on-site SEO, page loading times, etc), however, backlinking is still as important as ever!

What type of on page SEO is the main focus now?

Oh the on-page SEO didn't change much by itself, as far as I know. Google continues giving the title, h1 and meta description text the most importance. On page SEO is of course a joint effort, so all of the elements (title, h1, h2, etc, pictures, alt-text, and so on) should reflect your main keyword/niche. Even videos that you post up, should be well optimized.

However, I was talking about on-page SEO's relation to the other ranking factors, like domain name, off-site SEO and so on, which has grown some in importance (according to Google). Backlinking is still king though.

        Cheers,

        Chris

meta description ?-- Perhaps if it is 1999

Meta descriptions won't help you rank in Google, but are obviously important as that is what Google uses 99% of the time for a description of your site in its search descriptions.

Actually, according to seomoz, meta tags (both title and keyword) are one of the top 25 ranking factors. Sure not the most important ones, but still important enough... So apparently it is indeed still 1999

Actually, it's MORE important than last year. Why, more competition has probably come into the fold within a year, making it more difficult to compete.

Backlinks will always continue to be the most important ranking factor in getting high search rankings.

One of the most overlooked aspects of on page though is without a doubt *optimized internal linking*.

The power your own domain can generate for rankings is huge assuming you have the time or money to create all the content to make it worthwhile.

All of the above plus.......keep your content fresh. Static sites that just sit there year after year without a single amendment will literally just sit there while the hyperactive upstarts sprint past.

So regularly update and add to the website content. That helps greatly.

I saw interesting post about this years algorithm (since release of Google Caffeine). I'm not sure how trusted source is, but guy seems to know what he is talking about and he has done serious of tests.. for one, anchor texts are not most important now, but instead they come last... here is article, and I'd like to hear other opinions on it.

As I observed I think backlinking today is the most important than last year, Why? Because competitions in the market today is still growing that's why everyone must improve and more effective than the old one.
