Product Affiliate v Google Adsense

I run a site that earns its money through product affiliate marketing. I read a lots of posts here about people making a substantial money from AdSense. Because my site gets some substantial traffic anyway, I thought I'll put some Google Ads and see how much they'll make.

These are figures, before putting AdSense on the site:

approximate traffic, unique visitors per month .... 1,650
money earned from affiliate product marketing .... GBP 65.00
money earned from AdSens ............................. 0.00

.................................................. ........ total GBP 65.00

I run AdSense for exactly 30 days, here is what I got:

approximate traffic, unique visitors per month .... 1,650
money earned from affiliate product marketing .... GBP 34.00
money earned from AdSense ........................... GBP 13.11

.................................................. ......... total GBP 47.11

The way I read this, is that introduction of ads distracted visitors and reduced the overall income by 28%. Another aspect is that affiliate income on its own is 495% higher than income from AdSense.

I would say that this sends a clear message, AdSense is easy to set up, but you'll make 5 times less than if you invest some effort into product marketing.

Depends on the cost of the keyword. If the adveriser has to pay something like £0.15 to place an ad it is not worth it. If on the other hand, he had to pay £15.......

And the click rate will never be the same each month. In another month there might be 75% more clicks. Affliate income could be higher because it occpies a premium space on the layout of the site, maybe you should run Adsense and Adsense only to see. And as for the £65 from from sales, how consistant is that? I would have thought that fluctuates too just like Adsense clicks.

It's same product for affiliate marketing and for AdSense. On a product where advertiser is paying £15 for AdSense click, affiliate commission would be higher as well. This test definitely is compareing like with like.

Unusual thing about affiliate commission is that it is razor sharply same each month, between £63 and £65. Pretty constant.

I pretty much gave ads the best positions on the page, like on the very top-middle etc.

Your comparison was good but product marketing needs more time. Selecting product is not easy and then after choosing it starting website and promoting it is another side and needs time and the ratio of success in this field is less than Google Adsense clicks in my opinion.

These are interesting comments. I do not really have any experience outside of affiliate product marketing. I did indeed spent lots of time building links and writing articles on this site.

This is just bog standard product, nothing special. I agree that this example is just approximation, but most likely ration on other products will be similar. Ratio of 5:1 in aff.products to AdSense means that one would need 5 AdSense sites to match the income of one aff.product site.

Adsense income is good. however, I think the page layout has to be rearranged so that the Ads can be easily seen. on the other, I have been running a blog, pasting articles and press releases, yet, adsense income not impressive while affiliate income not impressive as well. Can any one help out on what to do? I am really at the cross-road.

I think you cannot conclude by comparing in 2 months only. At the same time the 65 income from affiliates is so small and maybe not stable accross previous months. Any conclusion you are trying to draw from the above comparison will just be premature,.

I agree that in most cases you don't want Adsense on a site with either affiliate products or your own products. There are exceptions that do work well this way but it isn't common. As you mentioned, it distracts the visitor from the main objective.

However, Adsense is better choice in certain niches that don't lend themselves well to affiliate offers.

You can't really compare 2 months income and make your conclusion.I think using adsense with affiliate product is better than using only affiliate product. Those who are willing to buy would buy and those looking for info only would click, but having product only, you drive those looking for info away to other site.

There is not enough data to make a conclusion like others have stated. You might want to read the book "The House Advantage" by Jeffrey Ma to get a better understanding on how to interpret better.

It's different skills for adsense and affiliate marketing. With adsense it's quantity, you build enough pages on enough sites that offer revenue sharing then eventually you'll make money.

With affiliate marketing, it's all about funneling to one specific page. If you just have a random affiliate link on your page and your page is not targeted then that just makes it less likely that someone will click on an adsense ad.

You can make money with quantity with adsense but not as an affiliate. It's good to try affiliate marketing to try to make things more fun.
