Can I take the exact content from a blog post on my site and submit it as an article on a directory? I understand that duplicate content only applies within a site, so would this be okay?

Yes. However I would probably submit more of a "dumbed down" version to article directories and direct your readers back to your blog for the full article.

This was a question I had as well, so thank you all. Related to that, when talking about article marking on 5 different article sites, are you submitting the same articles to each one, or are you creating completely different content for each?

Should be alright with some article directories.
Give it a random title and maybe shorten it a bit.

technically, it is not good to post same content. as abmation said, make some changes, then it would be fine. the major article directories will reject if you post the same content. naybe some of the low level article directories will be okay with it

Do you have any reasons why it's technically not a good idea besides the chance of rejection? And don't say duplicate content or I'm going to lose my mind.

Yes, you can,,, but I generally dont like that idea because what you submitted will technically compete your original post in ranking...

Hey thanks for all the great replies everyone. It seems that the growing trend when it comes to backlinking and blogging in general is to post QUALITY content. I'm going to edit my posts into new articles and hopefully make them interesting and informative enough to get other people to link to them for me as well - that's the goal at least.
