SERP & Content Question

Hey guys,

I've been lurking for awhile, but this is my first time posting. I am a noob so be easy please =P

Ok so here's the scenario. I have a page that shows up in the top 10 for a certain profitable phrase. The content is meh. While this page obviously has the keywords laden within the content, it's not particularly relevant to the phrase that it ranks for, and I'd much rather have a different landing page show up, preferably something more relevant and compelling. In fact, I already have content which is substantially more relevant in terms of title tags and body content, but this page does NOT show up in the SERPS!

I have a suspicion of what's occuring: the URL for the page that ranks is only 1 step away from the root domain (e.g. http : //url.com/irrelevant_irrelevant_relevantkeywork.html,) while the content that I would LIKE to rank is 2 steps away ( e.g. http: // url.com/articles/relevantkeyword_relevantkeyword_relevantkeyword.ht ml. ) The reason that I've structured it this way is because I have both a series of older content which is not managed WordPress, and a blog which is.

My first question is can I redirect the page that ranks to the WP article, and my second question is will this affect the SERP for this term? And thirdly, because I don't know what I don't know, is there a more effective general approach to ranking my articles that are managed by WP, as my articles not managed by WP seem to do better across the board?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

If you want to transfer existing authority, page rank and backlink juice from one page / site to another the best solution is to create a permanent 301 redirect; generally it will pass 100% of the PR and link juice to the new page.

If you want to keep your position for the new page in the SERP's then make sure your on-page optimization is done for the same keyword as the original page and that the content is quality on topic copy with plently of LSI (related) keywords.

    Hope that answers your question

      Thanks a lot DannyP!

And a follow-up question to whomever that would like to help: Approximately what proportion of my backlink profile should be deeplinked/linked to a subdomain?
