When I post a link to a website in my signature, as you can do in here and many other forums (regardless of follow or nofollow), is it counted as a single backlink or does it count for whatever number of posts you have with that sig link?

From each post you'll get a backlink. Google will consider as multiple backlinks from one single domain.

I believe it counts for each page your signature appears on.

You can use your website link as signature for any forum. Nofollow or dofollow links is both of is counted for backlinks.

So dont worry about forum signature backlinks.

I´m not worried about the follow or no follow as when I place a link it is to draw traffic, not for SEO. My worry is that in doing so the search engines might see an irregula patern of some sort andpenalize me for it.

      Hi ENchat,

I suppose you can count anything you want to count. I had a dream about 100 billion backlinks as I slept last night, do they count as well?

The bottom line is that nofollow backlinks do not pass PR nor anchortext value. So count them if you wish, but don't expect any direct SEO benefit from them.

There may still be some value in nofollow backlinks, if they are placed on websites that have lots of well targeted traffic then you can expect some direct link traffic, which bypasses search engines.

lol that's just dumb. you think search engines will penalize you for some sort of irregular pattern like posting in forums? if so, then every internet marketer would be posting in forums with links to their competitors to get them penalized by the search engines. most of the stuff you hear about the google sandbox and search engine penalizations are a total myth, if they were true then everybody would be doing them to each other to eliminate the competition. its actually a lot harder to get "penalized" by search engines than you would think

Sorry if the question seems dumb. My point is, i actively participate in a number of forums and, not being a vetean on this field I got to thinkig what would happen if the average 100 or 200 posts i hve over a number of forums (more than 10) suddenly displayed a link to a website. So within 15 minutes I could have over a thousnd backlinks to a page with no domain age, that´s what i meant by irregular pattern. If I knew that only theposts that I write AFTER i add the signature link diplay that link I´m ok, I can only write so fast, It´s about having a link in all the other posts i have written over the years.

My apologies if I didn´t clarify my concern in the OP

I assume it is counted as a single backlink per forum.

    Here you go: Backlink Checker

Re: Multiple backlinks from multiple posts @ single forum? I think since each post you make on different thread, that is a different link for search engines to crawl through. So, IMO, you do end up making multiple backlinks on one forum but multiple posts.

...the answer to this: there are lots of factors.

Yahoo and Google are two separate search engines. The two, of course, have systems of acknowledging links different from each other. A theory I can provide is: Google is able to provide more comprehensive search results for its users, majority of the search traffic uses Google, and Google will relatively become slower than Yahoo in terms of counting the links.

Yeah, each post on a forum with your backlink counts as another backlink (though all from the same IP). That's why it's great to post on forums.

I don't know what the rest of you think, but I don't put a backlink here only because I don't want my competition to see or know about Warrior Forum.

    Okay guys,

Nofollow links are NOT shown in Google but it will show in Yahoo and Altavista.

All links in the forum is counted as a separate backlink only that it is from the same IP and domain.

Does it contribute to SEO in general? Yes
Does it contribute to SEO even if it is nofollow? Yes

So many confused posts here that it is driving me insane.

Slightly off your original question but since the no follow subject was brought up I wanted to point out that those links can still be valuable. I just watched the google video about Wikipedia and although there might not be any SERP value in Wikipedia links they can still be valuable. I added a link to Wikipedia and it brought a reasonable amount of traffic to my authority site where there was a lot of valuable content and I could make sales. Same goes for other no follow links, they can still bring valuable traffic.

      Hi Andrew ,

Yes, they may have value, but not in the context of this discussion, which was "Do follow and No follow counts as backlinks in the eye of google". Nofollow backlinks pass no PR nor any anchortext value.

Since your concerned more about getting traffic from the forums than SEO value, I wouldn't worry about it. You would be getting multiple backlinks from a single domain, but you won't be penalized by Google. The worst that could happen is that the additional backlinks from the same domain may not help as much as far as SEO value.
