Please Help Me Find A Niche Keyword Blueprint

Hi,

I know how to build sites, monetize them, seo etc. But what I'm stuck on is keyword research

With so many tools and methods it's truly overwhelming.

I have Market Samurai, Micro Niche Finder and a few others but I think I would rather do it manually if I knew of a blueprint.

Basically what I want to know is if I choose a keyword what are the steps to finding if it's one that you can build a niche on and will get enough traffic to generate income and of course get on Googles first page fairly quickly.

Currently I use this method but I'm not sure if it's ok...

Once I find a keyword I go into google, using firefox seoquake tool and analyze the top 10 results.

If the average PR is 2.0 or less (hard to find) then I check the backlinks, keywords in domain and title and if all are low I think it's good.

But what I'm not so sure about is the competition numbers and any other factors I may be missing...

I would appreciate any advice you other warriors can give me.

If there are any other tools that you know about that work I would be interested in knowing about those as well.

    Hi Craig,

    About a month ago I bought a Mark Hess WSO called Targeting Longtail Keywords For Traffic and Profit. It was really cheap ($7 I think), but it had a really simple, and different angle on keyword research. I really got a lot out of it, and definitely recommend it.

    I don't know if it's still available as a WSO, but I am sure Mark would sell it to you if you asked.

      You're focussing too much on competition. You can ultimately beat your competition with proper SEO.

      Make sure the keywords that you target are longtail (minimum 3 words), are usually targeted by advertisers and have a decent search count..

      Its very important to use the keywords properly on your site by doing proper on site SEO. Its not only about which keywords to target but equally important how you use the keywords on your site.

    @smartsites: One way I identify a profitable niche is to see if other people are bidding on paid keywords around the niche.

    And especially if they are using the exact keyword you are thinking about targeting.

    The way I see it is if more than one person is willing to pay money for a particular keyword, they are probably making money from that traffic.

    After that, I review the websites that are paying money for your niche keyword and the organic results. I'm not just looking for SEO stuff like links, keyword density, etc. I'm looking for more general marketing tactics like hey is this just a squeeze page or are they dedicating an entire blog with 100s of articles to this topic. Are they using video, podcasting, email list... what are their unique selling propositions.

    I look at very general marketing stuff as well as SEO and Alex rankings to figure out how well entrenched this person is.

    Or if you're already a member of the niche, that's even better.
