When it comes to SEO, I'm a complete beginner. I hear people discussing "long tail keywords", and I'm fed up with not knowing what the Sam Hill they're talking about.

To help rectify this situation, I've found a book on Amazon that I like the look of: "Get to the Top on Google" by David..."Get to the Top on Google" by David...

Would you guys recommend this, or is there something better out there?

I think just reading through relevent forums will give you all the information you need. ie - seoelite.com/chat BradCallen.com and ask-me-about.com

Also, I think you can get Brad Callen's SEO Mindset book for free. A proper book, not an ebook.

To answer your question if you haven't already found out. Long tailed keywords are less competitive / generic words or phrases within a niche. ie - 'promotional products' is not long tailed... but 'low cost promotional products' is.

It is far easy to rank higher for long tailed keywords than more competitive, shorter phrases. Especially for new websites. These are also referred to as low hanging fruit. They are easier to get!

    Hope that helps.

I rather buy a book and learn about SEO than to wonder all over the forums wasting time trying to find answers about SEO

Usually by the time these books are put out on the market, the algorithms have changed.

If I were you, I would just save my money and browse around on the front page of forums for a few minutes a day. This is really the only way to stay current as things are changing practically all the time.

Thanks Clark. To be honest, the latest SEO advice is completely lost on me as I don't even have a grasp of the basics. I was hoping to find a gentle introduction that would bring me up to speed so that I can decipher the posts in this forum!

      Gotchya.

SEO Book is a good book. I'm not sure if it's still updated, but the information in it will definitely give you a great basic understanding.

    Hi John,

I just released an ebook on SEO earlier this week. It is up to date and aimed at beginner's. There is also a free email course on my site about SEO.

    Cheers,
    Suzanne

Sorry for the delayed reply, Suzanne! I'd forgot to check back for replies to this thread. What a bloke I am...

Thanks for the link to your SEO book. I've checked out the site and I'm impressed with what you've created. I've yet to create my own site, but when I do and need to SEO it, I'll be back to pay your site a visit.

    Hi John,

I just bought this book last week, and have nothing but good things to say about it. SEO is one of those topics where everyone has an opinion, and it's nice to hear from an expert.

Hello there, cozandeffect. Do you mean the book that I mentioned in my opening post?
