Is there a benefit in purchasing an targeted keyword domain name and re-redirecting it to your main website, are there any disadvantages, also does it make a difference if its .me or .tv
Thank-you.

The extention (.com .me) does not matter in SEO, but some argue that it does matter purely based on how .com is most common and people assume a domain ends with it. I would not worry about this, your SEO will make up for it.

Of course it will help if you buy a keyword domain and 301 redirect it to your main domain. However, you will solely rely of they keywords in that domain, and can't optimize past that, so pick a good one. Also, you should figure that this keyword domain could outrank your main domain eventually, and soon people will know your website by its keyword domain and not by the original. So in this respect, it is more of a branding issue. Are you willing to compromise brand, for keyword authority?

Short answer, yes it can be helpful to redirect a keyword domain.

You actually have it backwards. If you bought a brand new domain and
redirected to your website, what would be the point? The domain would have
zero behind it. You would then have to start from scratch building authority
to the new domain. Pointless, actually. That is if you 301'd it. If you just
did a redirect using your host, who knows. It may never show up anywhere.

You want to redirect your old website to the new domain, after transferring it
over, of course. Then keep building backlinks normally to the new website.

But there is nothing magic about it. Hard work either way.

Do you think warriorforum.com would fair better if they bought internetmarketingforum.com?
      Hardly....

.me or .tv makes no difference, but in all seriousness, I would just do a lot more SEO
on the current site. Either way, that's what you will end up doing anyway.

Actually you will still have your original domain active in the serps and still optimized for your key terms. It's not like you lose everything you put into your original domain just because you redirect a new domain to it. The new domain will simply just be there, waiting to gain ranking and be there when people search for its keywords. Unless that happens, everyone will still be seeing and searching the original. So I view keyword domains as a secondary effort rather than a replacement.

Thank-you for your replies, I now don't think I would gain anything with purchasing a new domain name. In a flash of inspiration this morning I thought this idea would save some work, but I'm encouraged to find my website on page 2 of Google tonight for the keyword, so I will persevere with my current SEO efforts.

Then there is no point to using new domain.

The point in using the new domain would be to get some use out of it. You can't
get any use out of it by still pouring 100% of your efforts in the "old" website.

You will need to boost the new domain somehow. If it's just a redirected domain using
any number of ways, it will have PR n/a forever. May not even get in search results
          anywhere except in text.

Now if it looks good on a business card, that's another thing...

I second Paulgl's oppinion. Buying brand new keyword domain with zero authority and links just to make 301, I would say it's waste of time. Maybe if you build small website on that new domain, and make some link on it to main site. I see that as more valuable move.
