Question about backlink building

I got some great advice here a few weeks ago about building backlinks. I have been submitting some articles to some of the more popular sites and thankfully most got published.

The results have been better than expected, the key phrase I have been working on "hypnosis recordings" has made it to page 2 on Google and it even appeared at the bottom of page one a few times.

I was also advised to sumbit our site to several directories which I did. Some of them asked for reciprocal links which are now on my links page however, when I have used 2 backlink checking sites to look for my links, non of them are there in return and I wondered if this was usual. I am not that happy about reciprocal links but I understand that they don't do any harm, but if I am not getting the links back in return, I may get rid of them

Any thoughts?

Which backlinks tool? Most of these tools either
present incomplete data or don't have a complete
    link database.

Link exchange is old school, the benefits are questionable.

Were those pages indexed to begin with? Also check the cache date before acquiring a link. If the page has not been cached in two months, expect it to take that long before Google notices the link. And as Tryus suggested, link exchanges are questionable. Try getting a couple of solid relevant links.
