Need some help on my first big keyword

Here's where I am:
I have a niche blog in a well converting market that gets a decent bit of traffic and earnings per day. Nothing to jump and celebrate over, but nothing to sluff off either.
Currently, I'm being outranked by a bunch of garbage adsense sites on what I consider to be a fairly competitive keyword that gets around 9k searches a month.
Optimizing for this keyword and a number of other short tail keywords, I've managed to increase my traffic by about 40 percent this month. But it still isn't enough.
I'm looking for someone who can look over my site and give me a bit of SEO coaching.
If you have some time and would like to give me a hand, it would be much appreciated. I'm sick of buying WSO's and products only to hear advice from a book or a video.
Any input is well appreciated, but for confidentiality reasons, I'd prefer not to openly disclose the website or keyword in this thread.
