I understand the argument for using Long Tail Keywords, but in my industry, although they generate a lower search volume the market is still very competitive, so my question, are they worth a lot of hard work or should I stick with Short Tail Keywords?

You'll probably find a lot of different opinions, but here's mine. The longtail can be used for driving traffic when you're not ranking for your main keywords, but even if this isn't working what happens is the more content you put up the more internal links and internal links count for rankings when you're using them right. Also as you content grows you start picking up searches you weren't targeting anyway. I think of it like a snowball, the more longtail targeted content the more authority you start to get (and more internal links and potentially links back) so you can start ramping up to more competetive phrases. That's not to say don't start the seo for your main phrases right away.

I feel it is most unlikely that long tail keywords in any niche will have more competition than short tail keywords. Probably the sample you are drawing your conclusion from is too small.

Then you said "the market is still very competitive". Granted that the market for long tail keywords in your niche is still very competitive relative to other niches, that is not the relevant factor. You should be comparing the competitiveness with the short tail keywords in your niche and not the long tail keywords of other niches and as long as it is still not as competitive as the short tail keywords in your niche which i believe will be the case, then you should still go for the long tail keywords. Just research more to get the most appropriate keywords.

@WalesFootball - Create as much content targeting your primary keywords as possible and you will start capturing long tail traffic.

    Hi

Sorry for the basic question but, how do I get a list of long tail keywords for my website? I have installed HitTail widget on my WP site but, is there anything else I can do / other research website that I could whilst I wait HitTail to crawl my site?

    Thanks.

You can generate it by yourself.

Try being imaginative and think up the likely 3-4 words phrases someone searching in your niche could be using to find such content. Then look your generated list up in a keyword tool such as Google Adwords Keyword Tool(free), Market Samurai, Brad Callen's Keyword Elite, for search volume and competition.

These tools will also give you additional suggestions once you type a phrase in.

Identify the phrases that have very low competition(-10000) but fairly reasonable searches(1000+ exact) and begin to optimize for these.

I normally choose a medium tail keyword and the add 3-5 long tail keywords in the text aswell. This has worked well for me.
