Working with a free WP theme--plugins

I'm using the default WP theme just to try to get my blog online; as I start to get some readers, I'll want to have them sign up to make comments, etc. I tested signing up myself, and wow--what you get when you log in as a newly registered user looks like crap. I don't even know what someone would do with that.
Does anyone use some kind of plugin that makes a more user-friendly experience for people who register with your blog on WordPress? Also, I guess it would be helpful if there was a functionality like a checkbox they could click to allow me to capture their information at the same time, like for an opt-in for a newsletter.
