How many H1's can I put on a page without hurting my SEO?

I'm using WordPress for my sites and by default the blog title is displayed at the top of every page as an H1, then I removed the automatic page titles and I'm replacing them with my own H1 titles. Do the different H1's cause any issues when search engines crawl the pages (I understand h1, h2, etc tags signal importance)?

A lot of misconceptions as to to what h1 refers to.
It is heading size. Not really factors of importance.
    (see below before screaming)

It refers, largely, to the main title of the proceeding article or content.

I think it goes from h1 biggest, h6 smallest. No reason
why you cannot mix and match them as needed.

I do mine by best fit where it should be. If I want one
line, and h1 is to big, I go to h2, and so on. All heading
    tags infer some "importance."

You can have an h3 above an h1, then have an h2 below that
    if your content warrants it.

But use them for your readers. If you have 1, 2, or 20 different sections
of content, use a set of <h's that are appropriate for each section.

You will not get any bounce by using a ton of h1's if an h3 looks better.

There may be 2 separate parts, or more, to a blog post.
<h1> It's all sections and how it looks. Don't go wild,
and in your case you are not.

How much importance does Google place on the H1 text? I was taught that H1 is fairly important, thus no need to place more than 1 H1 tag per page.
