I am curious as to how hard it is to beat certain large corporation websites such as walmart,sears,amazon,e-how, and a few more.

Is it still possible to outrank them with a niche website?

    My experience =
Yeah, sometimes it's pretty challenging for a competitive keyword. They're interlinked like crazy and often have absurd authority.

But if you're hitting a specific keyword just right (especially, but not limited to, a longtail), you can get the job done.

I'd like to hear what other Warriors say on the matter also.

I've been involved in search marketing for a very long time...

My experience as of late says that Google's really increased their quality factors and domain authority.. so if the walmarts are ranking it's not going to be easy... But if your entire business is based on SEO your in trouble anyway...

So i'd say, make your goal to build some authority of your own and you'll be fine... But even with long tails, unless your relevance factors are crazy good, and your links are uber specific to the niche/subject and highly authoritive you might not get in there very fast.

Dano77, do you think making more backlinks to my site would eventually get my website the number one spot?

Lorenzmac... Backlinks are one part of the equation... having an aged domain name and high quality optimized content helps in the big picture too...

Nothing is impossible, if they work hard, can go beyond

      Yes.
      Anything is possible.
      Work hard.
If you work hard enough you can create a search engine superior to Google.

      Nothing is impossible.
But aren't some things less practical?

Yes it is still possible. The SE's rank pages not sites and most of the time the only reason those large corporte sites are in the top ten is because of the authority of the TLD.

Alot of the time they don't even have prope on-page seo and very few links pointing to the page. There ranking purely off the authority of the TLD.

If your on-page seo is done correctly and you roll out a decent backlink campaign you can generally out rank them.

It's when those big corporate sites start doing their on-page seo and they start building backlinks to those specific pages that you'll be in for a fight.

that's a question that is impossible to answer with out exposing your niche and keyphrases to me and everyone reading this thread.

As a rule you backlink until your #1 or #2 or #3. Which ever spot you feel is good enough for you. Then once you've reached your desired position you keep building links to it to maintain the position but generally you don't need to build nearly as many when your in maintanence mode. Although that too depends on the competition of your keyphrase.

I think beating websites like Amazon is impossible IF you want to make a website and promote it lonely. Competing these powerful websites needs a big experienced team and it takes several years to beat them.
