Hey everyone,

I just found out that I have virtually two websites... one thats http://www.website.com and one thats http://website.com

How do I fix this issue? I know a 301 redirect which I thought I did, but I dont believe i have been reindexed yet.

Please any insight will help, I do not want to get dinged for duplicate content.

Thanks all!

Just use google webmaster tools via your google account. Verify your domain name and then you can choose a preference of which domain you want them to use / show in the SERPS.

So if you choose the www variant, then all links without www will still count like they are www This will help your SEO and your results.

    I hope this helps you!

In addition to that, you need to get across to your web host to do a 301 redirect of one to the other. I know hostgator does that for its clients.

        Great,

Thanks for the help guys, I am using dreamhost so I will see what they do.

I have been doing all of my backlinks with the www, but does that matter? If you redirect it counts as the same site no?

        Thanks again,

As long as you do the two things both of us indicated above, you have no worry about your backlinks as they count to your preferred choice

301 redirect and wait...you will not get DINGED! there are millions of sites on the web without 301's. It is very common.

      Perfect.

It was probably a scare tactic and prospective SEO guy told me. Little did he know, that I knew about the big G, and was a member of this forum.

Thanks Guys, I did both items you guys said.

Definitely 301 redirect to one version of the website. You don’t want to split the PageRank.
