If all you had to do was get a bunch of links and do some on page optimization, and you would have massive traffic and get rich quick, wouldn't everybody be doing it?

To me a lot of people think this is all they have to do, but really the true answer is you need to build a site that people love so much that they will return again and again and tell their friends.

SEO can be a big time waster for many, and waste of money for others. Do you agree?

(I've got some sites that we haven't done any SEO on in years, but they have thousands every day, and we would fail a modern SEO check miserably).

it's probably a mix of both. there are probably quite a few ways to make a "popular" site that can be monetized...

I agree. It's important to create a site that visitors will love and share with other people, but at the same time, you can get lots of traffic from search engines as well.

    I agree.

SEO is about one thing: being interesting.

If you're interesting you win, if you're not
you slave away building links for years.

I respectfully disagree. SEO takes a lot of hard work and patience but it's still in effect today and is definitely not overrated. Just make sure that using "overrated" is not just an excuse to put in the work, cause it does "work."

Agree with Tom, sure you can write high quality content an in a few years people will notice, link to you and tell their friends.

Or you can actively try rank your site and actually get traffic in a few months as opposed to hoping and praying.

There is lots of good content out there, what makes yours extra special?

Yet, most people who rank top at Google
don't even know what SEO is.

Bad marketers build links. Great marketers
have other people building links for them.
      Why? Because they're interesting.

SEO happens naturally when you have a
      great/interesting product.

In that respect, what you promote as "SEO"
is not only a waste of time(for a great marketer), it's bad for the
      Internet.

It all boils down on how you get things done. Some may succeed, some may fail. What's important is you're working hard and ask for some LUCK.

It should also be mentioned that SEO is like any other part of IM in that it too has more mis-guided information about it then good information.
Which justs adds to the amount of work, frustration, wasted money and time for everyone.

And unless you have an "in" as far as someone that you can talk to personally that has gone on and been successful with SEO, you will more then likely have to go through the frustrations, wasted money and time to find out what works.

Once you get it figured out though things can really start taking off. So saying that SEO is a waste of time is like saying that IM is a waste of time and we all know that is a lie.

I beg to disagree. SEO might be time-consuming and very tedious but it can surely boost your sales once your site is highly visible in SERPs.

Everyones not doing it becuase it can take months and months, and some people simply just dont know what there doing, a few months back i tracked my sales ranked at number 3 for a keyword and number 1 for the same keyword, I was getting on average 1 sales every 2-3 days ranked at 3, and 1 sale alsmot everyday ranked at number one, and you may have the best site in the world but if it cant be found, how are people going to find it to return in the first place?

The search engines usually will pick up sites in time and send traffic where appropriate, but being deliberate with your search engine optimization efforts will:

    1) massively speed up the rate with which you get results
    2) likely lead to even more traffic than had you just left it to chance

Just because something will happen naturally to some extent, it doesn't mean we should try and optimize it for maximum benefit.

    Just my 2 cents.
