I found a product I want to build an amazon review site around and am looking for advice from experienced marketers to see if the competition is weak. The primary keyword I would want to rank for is the product category, correct? The primary keyword shows 404,000 results in google. It gets 4400 searches per month for exact match. The top 3 results do not have keyword in URL, they are authority sites, including amazon, so I am assuming they are not optimized for this particular keyword. 1st result has 50 backlinks, 2nd result has 680 backlinks BUT almost all 680 backlinks come from the same place in this form www.mainsite.com/page 1, www.mainsite.com/page 2, etc. The backlink on these pages is an anchor text link at the bottom of the page. 3rd result is amazon and it has very little backlinks. 4th result is an ehow site with very little backlinks.

What do you think of this competition?

404,000 results in google is average competition. try to use ("") in your analysis. you search like "whatever keyword". this will give you exact number of keyword you search than ordinary keyword you type in google search.

you should determine what kind of website you will use. if you want to make a new website (new domain), it would needs more struggling to defeat those website you've mentioned. because you should struggling in SEO competition to defeat old website.
if you have more budget, you can search old domain name. this will help you in its backlinks.

if you want to do this campain, just keep in mind that SEO is not one night work but daily job.. i know this answer is limited but i hope this will help you.

keyword in quotes gets 251k results. I haven't thought about purchasing an old domain, I will look into that, but I am not looking to spend too much money upfront. I realize SEO is a daily task, and I have been reading posts in here to give me a good sense of what I should be doing. So I am ready for that part.

If you want to start with a new domain better buy a domain name like: productname.com/keyword.com. If that is not available go for .net or .org extensions. If unavailable, then key-word.com/net/org or keywordinfo/blog.com. If you cannot get your keyword 100% on url then try to keep atleast more than 80%.

Based on the info you have given, I think you can beat the competition, but it should take 1 to 3 months.

Yes, I plan on using the keyword in the domain name, based on availability it will have to be keywordguide or keywordbest.com/org/net.

My one major concern is the site with 680 backlinks, I checked them all and the majority of them are PR3, but they all come from the same place. Any problems with that?

Pagerank is only one factor for ranking results and don't worry about the pagerank of your competitors. And also as you said, its not necessary that you be worry about the website with 680 backlinks. Because it seems that these backlinks are not quality. If you want to register a domain that contains keyword on it and you have some information about seo, you can start it right now and i think with a little effort, you will outrank all of your competitors. But as you know, it take some months.

there many, many posts on this forum that will explain you, that for analyzing competition the number of competing sites and page rank do not really matter. You need to count the number of links and their on page SEO to really establish how strong they are.

Best tool for the job would be Market Samurai.
