Adsense as a Business Model

I see a lot of threads lately questioning the viability of Adsense, different methods & tactics, etc. And often, the argument "why send someone off your site for pennies, etc., etc..."

You can approach Adsense one of two ways: as an adjunct to your 'primary' business, or as a business model. Using Adsense to supplement your other efforts is fine.

However, if you're looking for significant, sustainable earnings, you have to approach it as a business model. I can tell you from experience with many others that failure to do so is what leads many to proclaim "Adsense sucks".

Specifically:

  • If you're going to make the effort and devote the time & resources, don't sabotage your efforts. Don't mix Adsense with affiliate sales and list-building on the same sites.
  • Take the time to read their TOS and Program Policies yourself rather than relying on 2nd or 3rd hand information about what's ok or not.
  • Understand that Adsense boils down to a simple equation: traffic x conversions (CTR) x payout (EPC) = earnings. To boost your earnings, you must boost one or more of these factors.
  • Commit to your business. Research your keywords so that you're targeting ones with decent search volume, decent payouts, and that you can actually rank for. Then put in the effort and allow the time to rank.

Adsense is a terrific business model if you understand it and apply yourself.

    I agree, and i also think part of the problem is that people don't know how to actually grow an adsense business...how to actually take it to the "next level". Instead they get stuck in a microniche site mindset.

    I think there is good money to be made in mirconiche style sites, but I don't believe this is what the major adsense earners are doing. I think they've moved beyond that to create information networks, revenue sharing sites, article directories, etc.

      My feeling about Micro Niche sites - and I own a few - is that they are waaaaay too much work for the returns. For the same time & effort it would take to earn $100/day via Micro Earning sites, I can do the same thing with one or two sites that will have quality and longevity.

      That's excellent, but then wouldn't it make sense to remove Adsense and not lose some potential opt-ins? My point there is that with any of these models, not just Adsense, diluting the focus often means unrealized dilution of whatever the main focus of the site is.

      What I'm trying to say is that in my experience, mixing business models on a site leads to less-than-maximum results.

      I should add that I'm referring to niche sites that target specific searchers.
