Google comes as close to the truth about great content as they ever have?

I actually laughed a bit at the end of this video when Matt says "good luck". Anyway his examples of how to get noticed on the internet (and get backlinks) were interesting for the examples he gives. Most of them do not involve anything that the average web master can achieve. the one thing I took away is that written content is not the best way of getting ton loads of backlinks naturally

This goes to what I've said for awhile - if you want natural backlinks in bunches look to providing resources, scripts, applications, novelty digital products like pictures, comics and video. Yes I know and I do get backlinks from written content like articles but the world we live in doesn't read as much.

Matt mentions written content but all his major examples are NOT written content centered and thats as much of an admission than google is ever going to give that articles alone are not the best way to get links. Check it out here

Another way to get natural links is to be in the top 5 results on Google for a particular keyword. Amazingly, people on forums and blogs, and even media outlets, will link to your site simply because of this. It helps to look non-corporate, non-sales and non-MFA, like a fan site or hobby site.

Of course, you have to get to the top of results to take advantage of this phenomena. Now, how might you go about accomplishing this...

Matt Cutts is a professional liar. His job is to stop people from exploiting weaknesses in the algo.

When you stop listening to what others tell you will/won't work, you will be halfway down the road to success..

Personally, I have disproved thousands of things people told me to be true when it came to seo.

ummm this video is really about backlinks and Matt doesn't say anything much. In fact to me he kinds of ducks the issue before most web masters. its pretty obvious that people link much more to novelty tech, pictures, videos, resources etc more than they do articles. So he may lie but in this video I find his examples very telling.

Well, I haven't disproved thousands, but I have come to find a handful of majors that hold no water.

As I have experienced its not how many people told you or advised you when it comes to SEO its how it is proven and and also a long term duration of method that used.

Great content may be gaining 1000 lbs and then losing it. I'm sure if you did that you'd get a lot of natural backlinks in the weight loss niche(as well as national media attention). Great content is usually not your word choice and syntax.

The problem is that when people find great content they link to it in crappy ways like on forums. The people who have the most link building power who run websites are too busy backlinking to their own sites.

What he says is 100% right though.

Use social media to market your site.

People will link to you if you give them a reason to, and it doesn't have to be a gadget or something controversial. Visit niche forums or niche news/blog sites and you see them linking to random (on-topic) articles all the time. It is done here too.

This is a internet marketing forum yet people don't want to market what they make. I guess it is rather hard to market a MFA site though... *hint* *hint*.

Agreed with Fraggler. I haven't been around here in months because I've been starting my own offline consulting business. I'm so glad I took that step. Once you have something to market, or skills to market, and you know how to do it, then backlinks and Google videos all become pointless.

Evolve your business and you'll keep moving forward, otherwise all this SEO stuff will bog you down. SEO is a very tiny fraction of a much larger world.

Find your skills, develop and expand them, then get out there and sell them.

Sorry for the off topic post Mike. Just wanted to say Hi and it's nice to see you still going round in circles with the big Parrot, Fraggler, et al.

        Hey Tj.

We all took a break for awhile. Fraggler and I don't go around in circles. I am mostly in agreement with him on a wide range of things. Big parrot and I might disagree on a few things but we are cool. Only people I really get into it with is the spam blast every site you can to death crowd.

I agree with the social marketing thing. I was just concentrating on the issues of actual content he brought up since I've been looking and working with scenarios just like he was mentioning that are not all article based content.

To me, it kind of depends on how 'MFA' it looks.

Virtually all of the niche sites I build are intended to make money in one fashion or another but they're also designed to fit into their designated niche as well. So, what happens is that people will see the site listed high in Google, they click thru and scan the site, typically not reading in depth but just reading headlines. Buyers, hopefully, click on ads too but they only account for about 25-50% of the traffic in most cases. Others, the info seeking scanners, often use a link to my site in Yahoo Answers or other such sites, forums and their own blogs.

Seeing this effect in action on a number sites I built with unique looks rather than using a generic theme or template made me decide to expand upon it. It's subtle, but effective, link bait to look like an authority site on the topic and not just something somebody slapped up using a generic MFA template.

Want to see an example of what kind of site designs I'm talking about?

Here's one of my favorites from the .info discussions: Roman Coins If you look like this site it just says hobbyist and not affiliate site. It is a true info site and not even monetized but does give you an idea to follow that's outside of the usual IM/MFA box.

Here's another one I just ran across tonight: Best Kitchen Sink It's a good example of what I'm talking about with the personalization and pictures built on a simple WordPress theme. Many of my sites are similar although this one isn't mine.

Another good one with a hand built fan site look and personalization: National Slot Car Network (lousy Adsense placement though).

In other words, think about what a potential buyer or fan of a product would expect to see in a review or informational site. When you do this you'll get surprisingly good links (just like the ones I've given here) and, if you've done things right, great conversions too.
