I've been adding my website to directories and have had some non-recipricol backlinks so far, and trying to learn little by little about Search Engine Optimization, but a few things I'm confused about..

When I get recipricol backlinks, say I get 50 of them, they ALL have to be on the front page of my site?? Wouldn't that look really tacky? Is there a way to make it more appealing?

How many high quality recip backlinks does it typically take to get 1 keyword to place you on page 1-2?

Do you have to backlink for every keyword you want to SEO for? Like FREE STUFF, contact 10 sites that have high ranks with that keyword, get their 10 backlinks.
Then FREE ITEMS, contact 10 sites.....etc
in order to optimize for each keyword?
Or does backlinking for any of your keywords rank them all on high SE pages?

Is it a good/bad idea to get top SE ranking sites that are unrelated to your website? I have some .edu backlinks, and a few other unrelated, wouldn't want them to negatively effect my ranking.

Lastly, is there a tool to find where my site ranks for each keyword? Instead of going through each page on the SE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

don't do reciprocal backlinks from link directories. most link directories are sucky and spammy anyways. just take the free-non reciprocal nofollow backlinks, if they offer them - nofollow backlink better than no backlink!

Post articles with links to you site in your sig or in the article of the body. Join forums and make posts. Make a signature. Hell, it doesn't even have to be related to your site - just somewhere you post stuff online regularly. Utilize google search to find blogs and discussions. set up google alerts for your keywords and related terms!

just set up you link like so: My Targeted Keywords so that your anchor text is you keywords

A site I'm working on ranking now is in the legal/pharmaceutical field. Most other related sites are owned by competing law firms and what not so it's hard to get RELEVANT backlinks. Well not really, diabetes forums. Yahoo answers questions. I needed help with a form on my website and now have about 50 backlinks from an HTML forum LOL! Easy things man! And I'm slowly starting to creep on up!

Thank you Scott! I've made some 12 forum profiles and didn't know I had to use my keywords like that...Time to go find the forums I used.

Should I re-ping my site once I've edited all 12 profiles?

You can ping them as much as you'd like! I'll typically ping the same link 4 or 5 times over 4 or 5 days. Or until I see that I have my backlink from that page.

What you want to do though, is go through the "member list" of the forum and find your name. click on that link b/c that's your public profile. that will be the URL you want to ping.

      CHEERS!

Mostly in directory submission there is always an reciprocal link i would suggest that you use regular listing or no follow attribute for your backlinks.

You can link to any page of your website link home page or internal pages. I don't think you can rank in first page by reciprocal link exchange. And for ranking for every keyword, you need to make backlinks with this anchor text for your website.

      Hi,
You asked if there was a tool that would show how you rank for individual keywords. If you use Firefox, you can get The Rank Checker tool from seobook.com. This lets you check multiple keywords in multiple domains and will show results if your site ranks within the top 200 results for the keyword.
