Is Google a must?

I know that Google is a key to have on your website or blog for it to be ranked well, but I was wondering if one could be just as successful without Google when marketing their website or blog?

    If you can do JV, Media Buys, Affiliate marketing, Social marketing or other viral marketing then NO... Otherwise SE traffic especially Google including adwords is the best source of traffic online.

    I guess what I mean is if you can't use adsense on your site or blog, can you still get ranked with Google or can you use another method?

    Adsense on your blog has nothing to do with ranking your site/blog for keyword phrases. Put another way, it is adsense that takes a cue from the content you have on your blog

    Ranking your site for keyword phrases is rather linked with the content you write on your blog : properly optimized for the keyword phrases you want to rank for and adequate backlinking preferably with anchor text carried out.

    In summary, you do not need adsense to rank a site
