I have had a new website built for me and everywhere i look for SEO it says that people use SEO for certain keywords.

Now i know about article writing and backlinks, but what designates the keywords, is this how many times it is on your website - such as "buy facebook fans" is the key words i want to hit, how do i go about targetting those keywords for a better Google ranking? Is this something that should hav been built in the back end?

You'll want the keyword in the domain if possible.

BuyFaceBookFans . com would be ideal for that keyword.

Also the keyword should appear in an H1 Tag on your page (preferably at the top) and it (and related keywords) should also be used throughout the page as appropriate.

Whoa, this is tough to do in 500 words or less but here goes...

Looks like you're interested in on-site optimization. You asked what designates the keywords and that depends on what people are searching for that relates to what you are selling.

So if you want to reach people that are interested in buying Facebook fans a quick search using the Google keyword tool produces these results:

    (all search #s global)
    buy facebook fans has 1600
buy facebook fans cheap has 36
how to buy facebook fans has 36
buy facebook fans and likes has 28
    buying facebook fans has 91

So now you have an idea (not always the most accurate) about how many people are typing in what terms to find sites to buy Facebook fans from.

So the most searched keywords are 'buy Facebook fans'.

To optimize your site for that phrase you would put those keywords in your metadata and then sprinkle that phrase throughout the text on your page.

Last I heard a 3 to 8% density of your keyword phrase was good.

If you can without making your site read like garbage try to open up your lead paragraph with your phrase and even better if you can make it an H1 tag and/or bold it to boot.

    A quick Google search for:
    on-site seo optimization
will yield plenty of results to give you more information.

Google Webmaster Central has plenty of info about on-page SEO factors. When it comes to off-page stuff like backlinks you want to have the keywords you are trying to rank for as the anchor text of your backlinks.

    Proper SEO Techniques

There is a basic, underlying theory to SEO that if actually used will always be successful. The theory is centered on providing the most relevant, laser focused content as possible. To do this, it’s essential that each page of your website be dedicated to one specific keyword string. Once you have identified a specific keyword for each page, start back linking to each page using the same keyword in your anchor text. Having highly specific and multiple backlinks for each page with specific keywords in the anchor text will make it very easy to get that page ranked in the top spot on the search result page for that keyword. There are a lot of elements comprised in this theory though. Let’s start first with On-Site SEO.

    On-Site SEO
How you build your website is very important to how the Google SERS (Search Engine Result Spiders) find, rank and display your website in the search result pages. While most SEO specialists downplay the importance of incorporating basic elements into each page of your website, it’s been proven that including these elements are essential to how effectively you pull up in the search results. So what are these elements? Here they are in detail.

URL Structure – The structure of your URL is very important, some dynamic websites use symbols like &,%, and ? Which make indexing your URL tougher on Google. Your URL structure for specific pages should look like this. www.backlinkteam.com/cheap_backlink_packages The URL is specific to a Keyword string that is relevant to the page it’s leading to. This makes it easy for Google to identify what that page is all about.

Content – Content is the most important aspect of your on-site SEO. Having unique, keyword rich content is essential to becoming an authority in the eyes of Google. There are some techniques that can get you in trouble like using hundreds of different keywords in your content. If your page is dedicated to “Mating habits of Apes” you need to repeat that keyword as often as possible in a natural un-cluttered manner. Remember, Laser focused content is key to getting ranked on specific keywords. Take time to write unique, relevant content that is specific to a particular keyword string and you will be well ahead of the game.

Page Title – Your page title is the first thing Google sees when looking at each page in your website. The page title should focus on just one specific keyword string which should be the same keyword string used in your URL Structure.

Meta Title – Meta Titles are the subject line that is displayed when your website pulls up in the search results. Include the keyword string in the beginning of your title to help make the keyword more prevelant.

Meta Description – Your Meta Description is the information displayed below the Meta Title in the search results. This is your opportunity to reach out to customers to get them to click on your link. Put in compelling descriptions that are keyword rich to increase clicks on your link.

Anchor Text – Anchor Text is essential to how your on-site and off-site SEO strategies link together. Anchor text is an HTML line of code that helps the spiders identify what your page is all about. The Keywords you use in your backlinks have to show up on the pages you are linking to.

Meta Keywords – The keywords you are trying to rank on for each page need to show up in your Meta Keywords with all types of keyword variations using the same keywords.

H1 Headings – H1 Headings are used to break up sections of each webpage. H1 Headings need to include your Keyword string you are optimizing on for that page.

Alt Image Text – Alt Image Text is essentially a title for image files. Most websites display image files with titles that don’t describe the picture. Your image title needs to be dedicated to the keyword you are using to rank your page. This is just another element you can include in your pages to help you have more relevant keywords appearing on each page.

Other Page Elements you need to include for optimal results

Videos – Including video links or actual videos is a great way to add rankable elements to each page. The video needs to be titled with the keyword string you are trying to get ranked on and link back to a YouTube video that contains your keywords in its anchor text along with your website URL. To make them really show up quick create 5-10 Backlinks to the videos depending on how much competition there is for your keywords.

PDF Files – PDF Files are easy to get ranked on the first page of Google if included in your webpage and the PDF title is the same keyword you are trying to get ranked on. Adding your websites URL and Keywords in anchor text will also help you get the file to show up on the first page for your keyword.

Shopping Comparison Links – If you have a product based website, you should submit your products to all the major shopping comparison engines including Amazon, Yahoo Shopping, Google Base, Biz Rate and EBay if possible. The trick here is to title the products with the specific keyword you have in mind and then link them to specific pages on your site sharing the same Keywords in the pages Page Title, Meta Keywords, Meta Description, and Meta Title. It’s possible to get two or three products ranked in the shopping results on the first page of Google for your keywords. You should also build a few backlinks to the actual product listings in the shopping comparison websites. This will help Google Identify your website and products as more authoritative and relevant if others are linking to them.

Google Place Pages – Place Pages are a new invention of Google that is designed to offer as much information on a geographic location as possible. You can use your business address and create information about your products, services, or other general information about your company using the keywords you want to get ranked on.

In my opinion, the proper foundation to start with in ranking your site is utilizing the right domain name, and having your keyword phrase in it would be ideal.
