link Indexing problems

Hi,

I can't get a grip on what is going on with these links.

In google webmasters tools show in 'links to your site' a total amount of links unrealistic over 40k, and shows only most popular. Seobook toolbar shows 5k links but when I get in there it's about 120 and there is loads of it missing.

I have a couple questions

1/ What is the best way/software to see ALL links pointing to any urls on you site?

2/ why every engine and software has different number ?

3/ is it possible that google indexed a page on which I had my links placed but didn't index links itself?

Thank you in advance for your help

JJ

I placed links with anchor text on wodpress hosted blog, checked that the post is indexed by google, but can't see the incoming link in Y! and other sources.

The way I reckon, there IS NO tool which would allow you to see ALL your backlinks.

Try Yahoo Site Explorer. Seems to give the most accurate results.
Alternatively, you could post your URL here and we could have a look (:

Plus you'll never receive credit for a nice little chunk of the backlinks you create!! This is just how it works MAN! It's the internet!

Yahoo! Site Explorer is your best option at tracking Inbound Links to your URLs. Google knows this stuff too... but they don't share it

    1) There is not any tool that show all backlinks of a website. Each of them have some limitations. Yahoo explorer shows at most 1,000 and Google webmaster tools shows a limited number for each website linked to you.
    2) Because every search engine has its own algorithm for indexing pages. Some pages will be indexed on Google but Yahoo doesn't index them and like this. So maybe you made a backlink and Google indexed that page, but Bing didn't index it. So Google counts that backlink for you but Bing doesn't count it.So its clear that you get different statistics from each search engine about your backlinks.
    3) When Google indexes a page, all normal links (except JavaScript links or such links) will be counted as backlinks. But following and indexing external links on a page can be happened and can not. It depends on Googlebot.

      Thank you for your replies.
      It's very useful.

What I was thinking is how can I check if a given url is indexed by google or not, and then the same process with Y! maybe and Bing.
I have a wordpress blog that is indexed by google and on the page there I do have 2 links with anchor text. For some reason - although the page with links is indexed - neither google or yahoo see my link there.

I don't neccessarily need to know about all of my backlinks, because as you said, there are discrepancies between engines and pieces of software, but I'm looking for some way to take it from the other side and check if a particular link is indexed by any of them.

For now I just checked GWT and y site explorer and I can't see it there, which doesn't make much sense for me.

      thx

Get the SEOQuake plug-in for Firefox. You can set which parameters you want to see, plus you can add additional ones from their site.

With the push of a button I can see backlinks, indexed pages by Google, Yahoo!, Altavista, Bing, a bunch of foreign Search Engines (I don't use this), and sooooo much more! Delicious, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Indexed Google Images, Digg, AOL Index, Blogger, Technorati, Yahoo Dir, Alexa, Age, Keyword Density for a page.... I could go on and on and on...

I really like SEO Books tool bar plugin for firefox - it quickly will advise whether a page is in Googles CACHE index - which is what I care about.

I could give 2 rips if Yahoo Site Explorer [ bings index ] sees my backlinks I want Google to see them.

backlink indexing is my thing ...

If you want the best idea of how many of your backlinks are registering

          - SEO Spyglass

          - Majestic SEo has some tools too - they dont crawl googles or bing or others solely - they have their own crawler and indexer.

The reason no tool will show you the exact amount is because of the algo they have going on. If you could get the exact amount you could possibly reverse the process and crack the algorith and then the relevancy of each search would be comprimised to the searcher.

I've found the best for me to be the yahoo site explorer. Google showing the least amount. Go figure right....
