Can Google tell the difference between a PR5 blog comment link & a PR5 in-context link?

Assume the same number of external and internal links.

Obviously no one knows the answer for sure, but based on your experience, can Google tell the difference?

I know blog comments can be effective, but how much less effective are they than in-context links?

If you're getting backlinks from a PR5 then it's all good! Google's going to Re-Index that page and find the link to your site. You'll get credit for the backlink, of course, and if that page that your backlink is coming from happens to be a PR5, then so be it! You got a backlink from a PR5!

However, when a Googlebot fetches a site it grabs source code (the HTML) So it's pretty easy for a Googlebot to decipher between content links and comment links... Does it make a difference that the link to our site is coming from a PR5 site? No.

This is how a GBot fetches code from an HTML/CSS site:

I myself think a PR5 in-context link is better than a PR5 blog comment link. As its possible that Google considers links in comments less important that other kinds of links. Its just my guess and i am not sure if its true But i like in-context link more than blog comment link.

There is definitely a distinct difference in the Google algorithm when it comes to valuing backlinks from blog commenting over in-content (contextual) links.

Ideally a backlink is contextual, placed high on the page (think above the fold), and obviously from a website with high PR.

There's a reason that some webmasters charge rental fees for contextual backlinks on high PR pages, and that's because they are FAR more powerful than backlinks in blog comments.

Blog comments used to hold a lot more weight than they currently do.... Google identified the volume of comment spamming, and then devalued those links. This doesn't mean not to use them, as they still have some value and you are always better to get a wide variety of backlinks to make things look natural.

    Cheers,
    Carney
