Hi Warriors,
These days i researched many keyworks, for lots of them, the #1,2,3 of the SERPS are always wikepedia, about, amazon, google place, about...

Is it possible to out rank these high authority sites? If yes, how?

Thank you.

Of course it is possible but it WILL take many years and a LOT of hard graft..

Building up an authority site from scratch is a labour of love and requires patience and dedication.

To dominate a keyword like "credit card" for example would be an enormous job bigger than anything you can imagine. To dominate this keyword, you would first have to rank highly with a lot of content for the whole plethora of keywords in all the subniches and microniches under the credit card umbrella.

The good news is that while you are growing this mighty oak from a seed you can dominate a lot of the long tail keywords along the way. This will provide you with a good income while you continue the fight ahead.

It always depends on the authority site and how many links it has.
I've outranked wikipedia for the same keyword with an exact match domain. It helped that the wikipedia site had low links.

For Amazon.. if their page has 0 backlinks and it's a specific product it could be easier. It matters what their page is optimized for.

For some searches, Amazon creates a special page dedicated to that category/keyword and you will see it have a TON of backlinks. I haven't tried to outrank any of those yet.

Also, using some web 2.0 sites, or article directories could give faster results than a new domain, but I try to keep my money pages under my own domains.

Not always, sometimes wikipedia is only #3 or below and is outranked by other sites!

Technically speaking, then yes absolutely... it is possible..
but it is not one day hardship you need to work on and on and on.. for a long period of time. that too with proper procedure (i mean white hat SEO) both off-page and on-page activities.
The major area you need to work on will be back-links and content on the website.
Other an online promotion, you need to work on off-line promotion too....

Yes . Its possible but if the first results are Wkipedia, its very difficult to outrank it. I suggest you to start it only if you think you can do a lot of work for outranking first results and also if you think it worths that you try a lot for this keyword. I myself don't like to work several years for raking high for a keyword and after that don't make a lot of money from it.

Ya it's possible. I've been able to outrank some of them after many months. I would not waste my time if you don't think the keyword is worth it though... I just have an ego of getting #1 everywhere by constantly updating my pages, adding content and more backlinks.

      Yes, you can beat them.

First of all, Wikipedia. They don't compete well for many buying terms, just informational terms. If they're serious competition for you then you may have selected the wrong keyword term.

Amazon, eBay and other commerce sites can be tough but, fortunately, they rarely have links or authority for specific keywords but use their immense site authority and internal links to rank. In many cases you can rank right up there with them. If your site looks like a serious review site, deal finder site or the like you can score quite well in terms of traffic and conversions even if the "big guys" sit one position above you.

      Hi Millerking,

Don't be intimidated by so called "authority sites". Authority doesn't typically come from the "website" level it comes from the page level, in other words it is really "page authority" not "website" or "domain" authority that you should be concerned with.

Nothing in your post indicated the strength of "authority" your competition has for the specific page and for the specific keyword you are looking at. Those pages might have very little "authority" for the keyword you are looking at, it may simply be a keyword that has little competition at all. Since Wikipedia doesn't monetize their traffic it could be an indication of a relatively easy keyword to dominate. Apparently no pages that have focused on monetization are appearing at the top, and this is often a sign of low competition and relatively easy ranking. It also often tends to be a sign of low commercial value keywords, so consider this as you mull over your decision.

Possible but it depends on the person that will implement the task to out rank the authority site like others said it will takes time, effort, patience and hardworking to achieve this.

like others have stated many times before Time, patience, and a lot of hard work is what it takes to overcome a super niche. There are a lot of other factors that you need to consider though.

I recommend to make your job a bit easier to search out for a nice exact matching domain if possible.

Like if you were going to try and target "credit card" as your main keywords you would really want to try to get a good name like "CreditCard /com/net/org"

  • It is easy to outrank an authority site if you choose a niche to attack. Most of the authority sites have multiple niches/keywords for which they rank. That is why they are regarded as authority sites- they dominate in all their keywords. However, all authority sites have their weak areas. They are strong in some niche keywords and weak in others. Do some research to find out those weak areas and then you launch your own attack - backlink building for those weak area keywords, manual blog commenting, automated blog commenting over some months and probably hijacking some backlinks of those authority sites.

Authorities are not too hard to outrank on long tail. They tend to show up because they are authorities and not because they have any SEO or backlinks. It won't happen in a day, but it's not going to take years either.
