Why is this happening?

I am trying to rank one of my keywords/pages but my main page is ranking higher than that acutual page for that specific keyword. This doesn't make any sense to me as both on page and off page seo are different for both. Also for some strange reason the description for my homepage for that keyword is a sentence pulled from my site as opposed to what I put in the all in one SEO pack. I hope this makes sense!

This happens quite regularly. If Google thinks your home-page is more relevent than a subpage, it will display it, dispite what onpage SEO you have done.

Regarding the description, again, Google will use a random chunk of text if it hasn't crawled your meta-descriptions yet or just thinks it can find a better chunk of text that relates to the search term.

    Is it a new site?

Have all the pages been indexed yet?

Have you done any backlinking/SEO yet?

Do you know how to do the above?

    Cheers,
    Dave

Yes it is a new site.
    Yes it has been indexed
Yes I have built about 300 backlinks to it.
I am new to this and I think I am doing things right it was just weird to see 2 different descriptions coming up for my homepage depending on what keyword was used for the search. Is there any way to change the chunk of random text that they used?
    Thanks for your help!

Ok, well in that case, your results are completely normal. Keep building backlinks and don't let the rankings sidetrack you.

When you are new, you tend to want to check your rankings every day. Take some advice, this will drive you crazy over time, just check them and record them in a spreadsheet each week. You can review the weekly results daily to structure new SEO plans if you like but checking rankings daily (especially for a new site) will make it hard to determine if your pages are actually improving as they will continue to fluctuate.

When did you last change the chunk of text in All-in-one-SEO-pack? Google-bots will need to crawl your website and read your meta-tags for the description to update. This can take from a couple of hours to a couple of days (and sometimes longer for new sites).

As long as you have updated it in Wordpress, I'd continue with other factors of your site and backlinking while you wait for Google to update the description.

I think you understood wrong. For my main keyword my homepage description is right. But for my other keyword my homepage also shows but it a different description...they took a chunk of text out from my page. So simply put my homepage will show up for the 2 different searches but will have a different description for both! Thanks again man!

Oh ok, in that case, Google has obviously just taken a selection of text from your content as it believes it is more relevant to the other keyword.

Personally, I normally advise people to just go for one keyword per page at first until they start to flesh out their site a bit. This is because it is easier to concentrate on optimizing a page for just one keyword, more can be added later.
