This is a long article about a shady online marketer who has gotten to the top of the search engines because of all the complaints launched against him! I thought it was interesting, as it was in the New York Times, and not at all from an internet marketing point of view. The owner of this company sounds like a real lowlife, as he threatens and cheats people. What's interesting, however, is how he does this on purpose, in order to keep his high Google ranking!

Even though if someone googles his name, they get lots of negative reviews, he's gotten top listings for search terms, such as brands of designer eyeglasses that he sells. So people who don't bother to look at reviews find his company by doing product searches. Yet the reason he's at the top is because of the backlinks from so many complaints!

I'm certainly not suggesting this as a method to emulate. I just thought it was interesting, as it reveals something about how backlinks can be helpful in some unexpected ways.
And it's a warning that, as a consumer, you should always look for reviews before you purchase something. If you read this article, there's a certain naivete about it. The author of the piece is critical of Google for allowing this company to be so prominent. But it's not really the job of the search engines to police the sites they list...is it?
