i was doing a search for tv shows of the 80s and 90s and a site named retro.com came up, it made me wonder how site rank for a keyword without it being inside of the domain name.

for example if i was looking for old tv shows i would expect something like forgottentvshows.com or 90stv.com but i got retro.com, so i just would like to know is this purely from anchor text telling google that this is what this site should rank for? and if thats the case whats the point of exact match domains or domains with the keyword in them if all you need is anchor text with your keyword in them.

EMD (Exact Match Domain) has it's strength & so does anchor-text.

An EMD most times will get you on the first page of Google very fast. The down side of an EMD is it's going to rank for the exact words in the domain name. Those words have to get traffic, or your wasting your time.

Without anchor-text backlinks, you won't get much further in the SERPs.

Exactly, the EMD bonus is just a gimmick that helps in low competition market get a very quick advantage for #1. Over time it's possible to beat EMD's but it takes a while and you will have to do more work than them (not a problem most of the time, most IM's seem lazy in the markets I go for)

You are drinking the koolaid without thinking logically.

    What does warriorforum rank for?
    What does amazon.com rank for?
    Zillow.com?
    ebay.com?
    Monster.com?

    Many warriors use theirname.com
    Makes no sense right?
How can Brad Callen rank first page for internet marketing with bradcallen.com?

How can kayak.com rank for travel deals? That's a kayak website, dang it!

How on earth can Icanhazcheezburger.com rank for silly cat pictures?

If only people would strive to do the same...

Well, point taken. I have tried to be a tad gentler.

Tried. But it's hard when people don't actually think.

retro.com is a very cool domain name. Go and do likewise.

i think i understand you, i'm still new to this whole im thing so i have a lot of questions, i have no friends or family to learn from so i must come here and ask you guys for advice, it is my goal to one day soon become successful at online marketing so that i may better support myself and family, but as i said earlier i thank you for your advice and i don't think your a bad guy i've seen some of your other posts and i think you just want people to stop being afraid to try new things and to think outside the box, something i hope i will be able to do.

While EMD's do help, they are just one thing google and other search engines look for when it comes to ranking a site in their search engines. Generally thats why for long tail keywords and EMD will be enough to get #1 spot, but if you are lucky enough to find one for a large niche then more work will still be required to get it to rank.

Backlinks with anchor text is the best way to rank for a keyword. Exact match domains can help as one aspect to gaining rankings but you can certainly outrank an EMD by getting some quality backlinks.

Same theory as on-page SEO, onpage SEO helps your site rank but Adobe is ranking number one in the VERY competitive keyword "click here" without any onpage SEO for this keyword. ("Click here" doesn't appear on Adobe.com at all!), this proves the power of anchor text links (thousands of people linking to "click here to download adobe PDF) - There's another one Adobe!

At the end of the day, backlinks trumps all else because while you can only be so relevant, you can build backlinks for years.

If I have 10 pages and 5,000 backlinks, I will probably beat a site that has 30 pages and only 1,000 backlinks. That's just how Google works.

You don't need to have the exact match domain but it does help a lot. Even so you can rank better than the exact match domain if you have done much more SEO.
