Slightly newbish person question about backlinks for blogspot blog.Need some help please.

Okay so...
Hello to everyone here at the warrior forum, hope I don't bother you all with my newb questions, as I did find a lot of information around here and would really hate to annoy the hand that feeds me to death.Since I tend to talk a lot I have highlighted the important words.

I'm Rix, a student of psychology from Romania.
Usually I made my money from seminars(not internet marketing though) and teaching some people what I know about SEO.(the very basics)

Now, considering I still have 2 years till finishing college, also my usual seminar clients moved away, and my country is in a profound economical crisis, someone suggested I apply what I know and start a blogspot blog about anxiety, something as a psychologist I know a lot about.

I did that in September but didn't pay much attention to it as it took a lot of time to get indexed and even appear in Google for that keyword, though I bookmarked it, wrote 3 articles( lazy) and got a hundred and a bit backlinks.

What's weird is that the page appearing in Google is not the page of the blog I built backlinks for, since I built them for my main page. It's a page there were no direct backlinks for so...do I keep building for my main page or, build them for that page now?
And why does that happen?

Also, what bothers me is that whenever I ask for advice, all people do is ask me that I did and say "Aah...complete noob mistake..you should have done more.." and say another component.
For example, if I say I did a lot of link building they will tell me I should have done more content than links, if I say I put up a lot of quality content, they say I should have gotten more links.
So..which should one focus on more? I want your opinion. From what I've seen with some sites I advised, focusing on anchor text backlinks does the trick.

    That is a completely funny example of people telling you only what they know to be true, and writing your different actions off to a newbie mistake.

    As a psychologist, you should understand that people will always advise you to do those things they do themselves, because strangely they believe that THEIR WAY must be the only right way.

    Okay on to business...

    In order to get good rankings in Google, Google wants to see links to your website.

    But as with most blogs, the front page of the site is only a reflection of the ever-updating content.

    So Google is wise to point to the page that is relevant, as opposed to the front page of your site.

    You should always be building links for your home page. Yet, you should also be trying to build links to deep pages within your site as well.

    Google wants to show the content pages. And if those content pages also have inbound links, then those pages will be deemed to have more value within Google's algorithms.

    The basics of ranking in Google is to provide good content, build links to the content, and maybe to update the site regularly.

    Everyone agrees on the first two. Most people suggest the third, but I disagree that is always necessary.

    And, just because you have never built links to the internal pages of your website does not mean that others have not. It is very possible that someone read your article, loved it, then Tweeted or bookmarked it, or gave it a link from their website.

    I know, I used to suffer from that.Luckily I learned that life doesn't happen only in my mind...

    I checked and something of that sort DID indeed happen. I always have helpful content since I only write about things I'm good that. Well once, I answered a question on Yahoo answers and listed the URL of my frontpage on sources. The person who asked read it, found that page, and backlinked to it.
    If only google could rank depending on the quality of the content...Haha...
    Anyway, thank you very much again for the help, I gotta start working on making rent from this.
