2 Types of Adwords Ads?

Newbie here. I'm setting up an adwords campaign and am wondering about the two types of ads I see on Google. There are the larger ads in a purplish box above the organic/places listings and the ones on the right side of the page.

I'm trying to figure out how to get one of the larger ads at the top and I don't see any explanation from Google. Any insight is appreciated.

    Hi Paul,

Those top results are random, usually the top 2 or 3 ads go there but it doesn't happen every time.

When your ads are in that position they will look like that.

I am not sure about the method Google uses for it but maybe it relates to the maximum BID you defined. Its just a guess and i am not sure about it.

Somewhere in their jumbled help maze they make a feeble attempt to explain it, but the bottom line is $$$.

My ad would sometimes appear above search results when my max bid was over $1.50. When I dropped the max to 50 cents, the ad never went on top, even if I had the only ad appearing on the page.

Yes as the guys have suggested this is you ad position, and is based on quality score and max cpc, if you look at you ave position column, this will show on average where your ads are landing in the mix, if you wish to raise your average position, raise your quality score or your max cpc.

People want products that can solve your problem. Thus, your ad must use words that are more focused on profits. Instead of saying our software Ecover is the best you can say Amazing Create eCover in one click.

    Yup, I agree with Pete..

Your ad position depends upon your quality score and max cpc bid.

But quality score plays major role though. If you have better quality score then you can even get in higher position by paying less cpc than your competitors do.

High quality score = less cpc
Less quality score = high cpc
