Common Backlinking Strategies ?

I am looking for what is the popular ways of building backlinks for your site ?

My knowledge of SEO is pretty limited but from what I've read so far the any of following or combination, improves your SERP
Code:
1) High volume backlinks from relevant pages in similar niche.
2) Low volume backlinks from high PR pages.
Assuming the following:
Backlinks on pages with lot of outgoing links has diminishing rate of return.
Content is supposed to be incentive to get others to link to your website, but this is really dependent on a third party action, and a bit of luck. I want more control in SEO by backlink building.

With 1), do you contact other websites to trade links ? Do you comment or build links in profiles you can create on that site ? ex) forums, blogs, social networking sites.

With 2), how do you get your link on a high PR site ? Do you pay for them ?

I also have a few other questions regarding backlinks:
1) What tool is used to discover backlinks of a competitor's website ?
2) Is it absolutely necessary to put relevant texts in your anchors ?
Some worries:

1) How fast or slow should you build your links without raising Google's suspicions ?
2) Are backlinks in comments and profile backlinks really worth the trouble ?
3) What are some good tools to automate backlink building ?
4) Does anchor text have to be uniform ? (ex. 100 backlinks containing the word "hello world products")
Another question for link builders, the sheer number of backlinks range anywhere from hundreds to millions. How can you build links by hand one by one ? Is it common to outsource ?

I have started doing some automated commenting....DOFOLLOW, but I don't think it's helping after 100 comments left.

Yes, the best way to build backlinks is to go about for blog commenting do-follow & forum posting do-follow along with that one can also go for link exchange of the site.

Everyone will tell you "build backlinks naturally." I for one don't really know what that means lol! Submit articles to link directories with your backlink in the signature and sprinkled throughout the article (if allowed) using your targeted keywords as the anchor text for the links.

Post comments on. You can post comments all over the place. Use your name or alias.... sometimes you can get away with making your "name" your targeted keywords (again making sure targeted keywords are the anchor text of most of your links).

You'll get both dofollow and nofollow. Don't worry about that at first. Have Google Webmaster tools set up, and just worry what it says about the sites linking to your and the anchor text that showing up the most.

Obviously, high PR backlinks are better. You can build 1k backlinks in one day if you want to... It will take Google and Y! a week to find 50% of them if that... Don't worry about over-backlink building... too many too quick is a myth.

Make squidoo lenses related to your niche - b/c you're right getting backlinks from related content (and yes links IN paragraphs) Google likes. Make hubpages, blogspot blogs, facebook fan pages, whatever! There is so much! Get on Ping.fm and Onlywire.com and register for all the social networking/bookmarking sites! Create and submit RSS feeds to directories! Directory submissions... hand pick good directories... most are sucky and spammy.

Just have backlinks coming from all over the place.... a thousand backlinks from one blog or article directory... not so great. A thousand backlinks coming from 500 different places (IPs & Locations) not bad... again you're going to get a mix of nofollow/dofollow... you can find high PR sites and .edu/.gov using Google search strings.

I don't feel like typing anymore and am tire. Hoped this is coherent and helps a little!

Outsourcing is common... I build my own and outsource. I've been trying out different backlinking services offered by other Warriors. Gotta Support my peoples!

Blog commenting is worth it... leave good comments not ****. Like I said, just use an alias or your name for the "name." Every now and then you can use keywords as your "name" and get away with it... But A link is better than NO link... Anchor text is important though... you don't want your site ranking for "scott g" b/c you made 10k blog comments using that name Lol!

      Diversity is key.

I live by the SEOQuake plugin for FireFox for researching my competition in G! You can look at your competitor's sites in Yahoo! Site Explorer to figure out their backlinks and try to steal or duplicate them lol! Age is a huge factor in competitive niches

      CHEERS!

Its a good way but after a while your comment and link will be buried in the second page and lose its effective.

This is true with some sites and the way their comments are displayed.

*Forum Posting:- forum posting is all about finding forums and discussion boards that are relevant to your niche and posting.
*Directory submission can cost quite a lot.
    *Blog Commenting
*Web Content Publishing or Link Baiting:-The most traditional way of building a link network is through web content publishing.

I was wondering whether free directory submission still worth your time?

  • I like blog commenting on high pr sites. They seemed to get indexed the fastest for my sites by Google and Yahoo. Of course, not all of them will stick and it does take some time, but it's a great strategy to use.
