SEO - Joomla! or WordPress... Ugggg... :)

Hey Warriors!

Ok, so here's the low down...

Joomla!: I have several Joomla 1.5 websites and while not a programmer I am pretty good at making & using them to the point where businesses & entrepreneurs have paid me to build and/or edit their sites for them. I'm not what I consider an advanced designer, but don't consider myself a rookie either.

WordPress: I have a few WordPress sites & have also been hired to install and setup the stand-alone WordPress script as well.

I appreciate both scripts, but have an SEO question.

I just bought a really powerful Joomla plugin called "AceSEF", which handles Tags, SiteMap, Search Engine Friendly Links, Meta, and Social Bookmarking so people can retweet entries etc...

I already know from my personal results that WordPress blogs get traffic, but am curious why? Is it due to it's search engine friendly links, its SEO plugins, it's sitemap or what? What Exactly is it that Google likes so much about WordPress that these types of blogs receive such a good amount of traffic?

The reason I ask is because if my new AceSEF component for Joomla covers these areas of SEO as well as WordPress I would just assume to add a Joomla blog to my site instead of doing what I have done previously - adding a separate WordPress installation in a sub-folder, then adding links back to each other etc.

Sorry for such a long post - but I really am at a crossroads and would appreciate the advice only from others who have a little experience with both platforms.

Thank you very much for your thoughts!

Have to chime in here, have sites on both Joomla and Wordpress that do pretty well.

First: SE's "love" wordpress because it has an inherently "good" internal link structure, from a user standpoint. Keyword (anchor-text) links that ARE the article name, point to the article itself, which (with most templates) will be wrapped in H1 tags (a good SEO "best practice"), and with the title "anchor-linked", and providing that the content matches what the title "says" it should be mostly follow the basics of SEO best practices. When SEF URL's are enabled in wordpress (Permalinks), the URL also becomes the post-title (by default), therefore "strengthening" the keyword positioning in the SERPs (as I am sure you were aware).

The almost-effortless and automatic combination of anchored-text link w/ H1 tag, combined with keyword-dense URL structure makes WordPress nearly hands-free SEO'd to begin with (also, the reason that the SE "loves" WordPress). Ensure proper density in the content, use of tagged images and bold/ital where appropriate and this helps further.

As far as Joomla: all of these things are equally possible, if more difficult to configure "out-of-the-box", but they are there. You can have the same link structure, the same H1 wrapped title, and the same SEF URL's. For the AceSEF component it appears to go a step further and include sitemap generation as well as other neat features (Social bookmarking and "internal links" should be pretty awesome). I think all of these should make AceSEF a pretty decent tool in the arsenal. A 404 redirect to the html sitemap would be pretty neato (yes, neato!)

All in all, remember that it is not WordPress vs. Joomla, but how well the site itself is optimized, overall. The SE doesn't really "Care" that it is WordPress, and a poorly optimized WP blog will do just as bad as a poorly optimized static HTML site. WordPress vs. Joomla really doesn't matter.

For a blog; both are ok platforms and serve their purposes, but for straight up blogging I still prefer WordPress.

Wow - what a great / thorough explanation! I am amazed at how much you know about this.

Thank you - I mean it - really! That pretty much answers my question exactly.

      Best regards!

Pretty much correct (I am a joomla expert) however I would suggest SH404SEF for joomla along with mow_rewrite being enabled in php and changing the htaccess.txt to .htacccess

IMO, google doesnt love wordpress anymore than any other CMS that is a myth.

Also, IMO, wordpress has no inherent SEO value and not even the SEF URLs are turned on by default, so I am not sure why people are so convinced that it's better for SEO. it really isn't UNLESS you know how to do it.

THe fact is that SEO is the same technique no matter what site you are using however SOME plugins that joomla have make it easier for example the SEO generator will generate all the tags for your pages based on the content rather than you having to type them in manually like in wordpress.

I could go on an on but either way it depends on what you are more comfortable using and what plugins you can find to make it easier and more automated.
