Backlinking to Subdomains vs Main URL

This is a total random noob question, but please bear with me.
Let's say I created a site, otherblogger.com and created 100 subdomains, each with its own blog.
Backlinks to otherblogger.com don't help the SEO of blog1.otherblogger.com, does it? (I think I know the answer to that one)
However, if otherblogger.com was just really one page that had links to each of the 100 blogs, wouldn't all those links to otherblogger.com help?
Or should I totally punt on linking to the main domain and JUST link to the subs.
That may sound convoluted, but I want to be sure I plan my backlinking strategy appropriately.
