Just wondering how it is people improve their google rank for advertising... I know it is using SEO, but not sure how to do it?

Adwords?

Super relevant ads to the keywords. Relevant meta tags, I used to write an article for each keyword group I'd target.

SEO?

Basic tags and that kinda stuff, then straight up links, build as many as you can.

To improve your ranking rather than focusing on a single word, try adding a few words to make a keyword phrase. One of the biggest factors google looks at is the hyperlink? Google looks for both link to and from your website.

Writing posts in your own words no spun text, Some good backlinks, When you have a new site most people won't backlink to your page so you have to find places to get a backlink. Any place that lets you add your domain name add it some sites are do follow and some are no follow. The right SEO tools. If you want to market by SEO learn as much as you can. I learn something new every day and I have been marketing the SEO way for about a year.
