I have never built, 'thousands' of backlinks.

I don't think I've ever built more than 100 backlinks, manually to any website.

Actually, the link in my sig probably has the most backlinks since I have over 1,000 posts. More than any other site.

Yet, I have dozens of websites, and more than 80% of those sites are on the first page for their chosen keywords. SOME OF MY WEBSITES RANK HIGH on page 1 above exact match domains, high page rank sites, and sites with thousands of backlinks! WOW, what's going on?

Let me tell you something, you might have already 'known', but not truly 'thought about' and implemented.

Ok, what's more important than ANYTHING else in the Google SEO game? (Yea I call it a game, because once you know how to play it, you can play better than others.) There is competition, and your competition strength depends on nothing else than their experience.

From my experience, the ONE THING that is more important than anything else, is VALUE TO THE READER. When you provide great value to the reader, you have great 'on-page leverage'.

The more on-page leverage you have, the easier the SEO game becomes. Thus, the fewer backlinks you need to convince Google that your website means business.

Think about it this way, say you stumble across the keyword, oh let's say, 'buy candy canes in bulk' ok?

Let's just assume the competition is mild to moderate (just use your imagination for what you think mild to moderate is)

I'm going to provide two examples, Website A, and Website B. Let's just say you're the one building both site A, and site B ok?

Website A is a 1 page site, 300-500 words with an about us and privacy policy page. The site is an exact match domain, say .net and the content on the page is targeting the keyword 'buy candy canes in bulk'.

Website B has 10 articles, each 300-500 words. Some of them directly targeting the term 'buy candy canes in bulk', and some of them targeting related subjects such as different types of candy canes, large candy canes, mini candy canes, etc. Website B also has a brief FAQ's page regarding some simple questions interested parties may need to know.

Now, which website do you think would have an easier time ranking in Google? Naturally, website B will have an easier time ranking because it has more ON PAGE LEVERAGE than website A.

On page leverage isn't always enough, you will typically still need backlinks to get ranked.

Now, naturally website B should only need a handful of quality backlinks to start getting rankings, at least better than website A.

Website A, will need far more backlinks to prove to Google, hey, I belong here. You will have to work far harder 'convincing google (building links) to achieve better rankings than website B.

I've always pursued this belief when building my websites. You should take advantage of related keywords, aka lsi keywords.

People say just to include these lsi keywords in your content. But, these are in fact similar subjects/topics they might also be interested in, and writing a post or two targeting these lsi keywords aka 'similar topics the user may be interested in' according to google. The more content you have RELATED to the main keyword, is just as important as having content DIRECTLY TARGETING the main keyword, thus the MORE on-page leverage you gain.

You'd be surprised, what whipping up a super useful site can do on mild/moderate competition keywords!

Sometimes, if you play your cards right on your competition, building a little extra content than you usually do, for your readers, can result in higher search engine rankings with way fewer backlinks.

Again, I've NEVER built thousands of backlinks, and I do just fine. I do ALWAYS build backlinks, but when I think of SEO my ON-PAGE LEVERAGE is ALWAYS the first thing that comes to mind.

If you need a boost in search engine rankings, try building your on-page leverage, AND THEN build a few backlinks, let me know how it went

PS - If you do a search for your domain in Google, you'll notice next to the search results there's a 'cached' link. This link displays Google's most recent screenshot recorded of your site.

When you increase your on-page leverage, you shouldn't start building the bulk of your links until Google has seen your new content. You can tell when Google's cached your updated site, by doing a search and clicking on the 'cached' link in the SERPS. Once the cached link displays the updated form of your site, then build your handful of links.

To get your site 're-cached' do simple things like submit your new content to Digg, or maybe a couple bookmark links.

Share it on Twitter or Facebook.

Or...Send yourself an e-mail via g-mail with your link in it. Google has to check the content of the e-mail to display the best adsense you see there right?

Once you get noticed doing some simple things like the above, THEN do your articles, press releases or whatever. That's the main thing, Google sees that you updated your site, then sees the links. You're getting linked to because you have an improved, useful site right?

Try it out.
