1st Page Ranking... Then Url Change!

I have a client that I've been working with for about 6 months. He developed a product that tapped into the formal wear market.

After a couple months, I got his site to the top of Google's first page for a couple of pretty darn competitive phrases. About a month later, he changes the name of the product, thus changing his url and has me repeat the SEO process for his new website.

So now, he has 2 websites on the first page for the same keywords. He wants to basically copy the new site and "paste" it on the old url, which isn't a good idea. I suggested he redirect the old url, to the new domain but my question is, how can I maintain the old url's position on page one? Keeping his exposure level the same. Can I keep building backlinks to the old domain to maintain its position?

Thanks in advance!

I did that a couple of months back. I found on two sites that google eventually chose one of them to be on page 1 and then dropped the other one and the total rank of the first one, maybe because it thought we we're gaming it on the same domain. Regardless of backlinks.

I would focus on just one the next time I do it. They always end up dropping doubles I find.

Thanks for your input on this. Anyone else have any advice on how I can keep both urls on the first page?
