Competitors clicking on PPC Ads

Obviously a competitor can google a keyphrase and start clicking on their competitor's ads. Obviously it would be hard to know other than by your conversion rate. Is this a legitimate concern? I'm also concerned about posting url's for review in forums like this one.

Any insight is appreciated.

    Regarding your first question, it would take a jobless competitor to begin to do that. Moreover, he is unlikely to do that given that his clicks are unlikely to be significant enough to derail his target competitor especially if a big company, unless he really sets out to attack by spending the whole day and other days too.

    If this was really happenning, it would have featured prominently in many discussion fora as the recipient of the attack would notice unusually large no. of clicks on certain days and is likely to "cry out".

    On your second concern, you do not have to specify your url as you can use anchor text which would not make your url directly visible.

      Some competitors may do this to research their competition and see what kind of sales/lead funnel they have in place if they're a high bidder for a competitive keyword. I'd say it might be a better idea to be in the 3rd spot for testing.

    It is simple on this and most forums as there is a link symbol on the panel above. All you have to do is write the anchor text you want to use, highlight it, click on the link symbol and copy & paste the page url into the space provided in the window that opens when you click on the link symbol.

    On other web pages, all you have to do is insert the anchor text in between this html as shown below

    => <a href="site/page url">anchor text</a>

    If you want the link to open in a new window, then it would be

    => <a href="site/page url"target="_blank">anchor text</a>

    If you want it to open in a new window and equally nofollow the link, then it would be

    => <a href="site/page url"target="_blank"rel="nofollow">anchor text</a>

      Surely there is something in place which registers the ip of the clicker, and cuts off the clicks to an ad that has been clicked over and over again.

      Anyone know?
