Lowballing adsense/other ad sources

I'm starting to get to the point where I really want to start scaling up the traffic to my site.
I am pulling in around 20k visitors per month, and clearing about 800/mth in revenues - i.e. my RPV is quite low at only $0.04 (as my site is free).
This obviously makes my life a bit difficult in terms of scaling up traffic beyond organic search (which I am doing quite well with).
I tried stumbleupon, and found the conversion rate was absolutely abysmal for my site (for several reasons which arent worth going into here). At $0.05/visitor i couldnt make money due to how bouncy their traffic is.
Does anyone have some suggestions for how to get low cost per visitor traffic through adsense or other mechanisms? Is it possible to put in lowball bids (say 0.01-0.03/click) and get impressions? I havent really played with adwords much.
The only real alternative is continuing to slog on with organic (which I was going to do anyway) or moving to a paid model (which is work)
