I found a niche with 11,000,000 global monthly searches, And the person in the first spot has only 354 backlinks, and the person in the second slot has about 22k , How is that possible? And could i have a chance to rank high on this keyword?

All backlinks are not the same. Backlinks from sites that Google thinks are better (with respect to Pagerank or whatever internal variables they are considering) will be worth more as a backlink than some site that I made yesterday about my dog (despite the fact that my dog is really great).

PS. When I say "worth more", this can be by a factor of hundreds or more.

I see, I'd never think 350 would outweigh 22k backlinks. Good to know

        It definitely could.

350 links from authority sites link news sites, wikipedia, cnn, etc would be so much more powerfull than 22K blog comments for example so Google has to think the site with the number one spot is more credible than a site that is possibly getting links in vast numbers using automated spammy tools.

Google is very smart and is constantly changing it's algorithms to ensure the better sites get better rankings than the sites using automated software products to create thousands of low-level links.

Let's put it this way. I could make 22k backlinks on one page. I could make 50k backlinks on one page. If the number of links alone were the important thing, then we'd all have pages that contained thousands or millions of links to our other sites and would all rank fantastically high.

Google does whatever they can to try to make sure that the "value" that they assign to a website is computed about that website, but not from the content alone. I remember in the old days (before Google) when people built search engines which acted as if the meta tags actually defined (or were related to) the content of the page. That situation was immediately gamed by web publishers, who realized that the people who wrote the search engines had a bit too much faith in meta tags.

I have a site that ranks between 3 and 6 lately. Some tools show inbound links at 300-400 for my site. I have sites on either side of me with a 1000 or more inbound links. I out rank sites that have 22,000 inbound links. It's about the quality of links, and content, on and off site. I think of it as throwing mud against a wall. These so called tools that spin and scrape and auto this and that, are designed to throw a lot of mud against a wall, and hope some sticks. I make better mud, and have a higher stick rate.

It depends. Judging by the small numbers of backlinks the site possesses, it is very apparent that the backlinks rooted from high authority sites giving it more credibility to take the number one spot.

There's a little thing called, "Relevancy."

Backlinks are only one part of any top ranked site.

350 great links would trump 22,000 junk links any day.

I have no idea why people put their faith in number of backlinks as
some search engine panacea. The total can be entirely irrelevant.

      Again...

Hi there, Paul, Some people here say that RELEVANCY is already a MYTH. How true is that?

Relevancy is one of the few things you can be CERTAIN about when it comes to any form of search engine marketing.

Nothing Beats RELEVANCY. The most important aspect of Building links & topping SERP's comes from this Factor (majorly). Similarly , Authority sites, Wikipedia, news websites helps you in a positive a manner.

Friend, numbers of backlinks does not effect on SERP but quality of backlinks does impact on ranking as well as page rank so I would advice you always collect links from website niches.

To work out the pagerank of a site X, Google's algorithm works (in part) by looking at the sites that link to X and then looking at the sites that link those sites etc. etc. Obviously, some of this means going round in a circle (if Z links to Y which linsk to X which linsk to Z), so the algorithm is recursive (i.e., goes round and round until it settles on a definitive figure).

So sometimes you need to trace back the backlinks across more than one site to work out a site's ranking potential, and this is why authoritative sites' links have greater weight.

At least this is the thrust of the original pagerank algorithm, although it has been tweaked a lot over the intervening years.

Google looks at Quality over quantity..

The first website I ever built has less than 200 links and today it's a PR6.

Get away from the mass mindset and focus on delivering quality in everything you do online...
