How much of a difference does it make if your url is your actual keyword or a sub site? Example, if my keyword is widget does it matter is my url is widget.com or mysite/widget.com? Can I assume that the major factor is making sure your page is well optimized and has many back-links so the url would not be that important comparing the 2 above.

Thank you for any help

having the keyword on url helps a lot.
for example if you are to target keyword sauce you can have a page name like sauce.html

Yes, having the keyword in the url is a factor in how search engines rank the given page for the keyword.

Having the keyword in your domain helps incredibly.

I'm getting beat by someone who currently has the non-plural version of my domain simply for that factor. Well, I outrank him in the plural version and vice versa, but unfortunately the higher search volume is from the unpluraled version.

I'm going against the grain of the other posts, but it is of very little help.

Don't get me wrong, if I had the choice, I'd chose the domain with the keyword in it. But the only benefit to having a keyword in the domain is if someone just links http://www.yourdomain.com/keyword.html with no anchor text. The link already contains keywords, so you have a link with keywords. But most of the time you have control over the anchor text to some degree so I would say it's of relatively little value.

It makes a big difference, probably the difference of being ranked first or on page 15. It is a big contributing factor, I personally find.

I have done a trial on this, trying to rank for a keyword with small competition and no backlinks, the same day I changed the URL, my rankings shot up!
