Does anyone know how you can track which keywords lead to sales with Google Analytics? I've heard there's a way of doing this.

It'd be useful to know which SEO terms or PPC keywords are working and converting to sales.

Affiliates can request that a tracking pixel be placed in the checkout page of an affiliate product, that lets you tracking software know when a sale is made, adwords can provide you conversion rate specs if you include tracking code with the link, major players like Amazon and Clickbank provide such tracking.

(Don't use adwords tools to track shady diet products)

Correlate IP address & referral source?
Manually plausible with some scripting, yes.

    Okay so here's the idea.

Use PHP to get HTTP_REFERER and the REMOTE_ADDR of every user that hits your site.
You can extrapolate the keywords from the referral url. Store these three values in a new MySQL table.

Now, for every conversion you get (depending on how your system works) store the REMOTE_ADDR of the user in question in a new table.

The rest is easy, just match tables one and two for exact matches and generate yourself a pretty little report.

    Makes sense?

As far as just using analytics, I have no f'n idea dude.

Nah, it wasn't worthless, I was just playing on the fact that you hadn't expressly mentioned that you don't know exactly how it's done.

It is definitely worth it to find out.

I was listening to a teleseminar with John Reese and he was talking about how you can get a code from Google Analytics that you put in your "thank you" page after you've made a sale. He said you can track which articles, keywords etc... are getting you sales.

He then says to optomize those keywords, write more articles on those, build PPC campaigns around those keywords, etc...

I did some research and noticed there's Google Analytics Goals and Google Adwords Conversion Tracking. Not sure which is better or how to set it up, that's why I wanted to ask here about that.

I'm surprised not more people know about this!
