Hey Everyone,

I'm looking to start a new Wordpress Amazon Associates website in my country (New Zealand) soon selling camping gear advertised on Amazon Marketplace.

Registering a domain name in my country is quite expensive and I was wondering if the domain extensions make a big difference on how my website get's indexed.

I'm looking to use a .co.nz extension which is more expensive than a .com.

So will the .co.nz extension be indexed in "New Zealand" search results better than the .com extension?

Or doesn't it matter?

What about putting mydomainnewzealand.com? Will that help with the .com extension?

Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks

The only thing I can think of is that mass media has trained people to think " .com" as the default ending to a domain.

So many people hear or read "mydomainname.nz" but will type in "mydomainname.com" instead or just plain "mydomainname".

This can lead to people going to the wrong company, or not finding your unless your website is well optimized.

But you have got to do what your budget allows you to do. You can always get the cheaper domain and then use a free blog from Blogger.com to piggyback off your keywords and a .com ending.

If you are targeting search results in NZ, it's good to have .co.nz. That way, google has more info on your target audience (them being from NZ). If what you are doing isn't limited to your country, I would go with a .com.

    Hey,

    Thanks for the replies.

So if I am using a .co.nz extension, how would I get it up the search ranks for that particular country? The same way as a .com?

    Articles?
    Backlinks?

    hey mate,

In my experience a .co.nz domain with EXACT keyword would rank higher in NZ local search than a .com domain name.

.co.nz is more a regional domain name and would make people think, that the site is only meant for New Zealand. This may turn visitors away.
