Are backlinks or internal links more important?

I've just been checking out my sites main competition on Yahoo Explorer and the majority of their links are internal links in their own site.

So I'm confused as to the weight these internal links would carry with Google.

Also several of the other sites that link back are small sites, run by the same people, and pointing back to the main site, would these type of links be important?

Thanks for any advice, on this and the best ways to build important backlinks.

    You need them both, but I would focus more on getting backlinks from related blogs, forums, articles and so on.

      The internal links are of modest value but come at essential no cost. Dofollow links from external sites is what really counts.

      Site explorer by default reports all found links, it supposedly orders the results by importance. To see only external links, after you click the links button, there's an option on the right to select Except this domain, you then get another option where you can pick All pages. The results this gives are more representative of the links that matter.

        Thanks for your advice.

        Had a look using the except option, that makes the links look more reasonable as a target. In fact it goes down to only 57.

        How fast can you build links without Google getting "moody" and thinking it's spammy?

    On page SEO is often neglected by Internet Marketers.

    I am able to rank very quickly for low competition words (lets say 4000 searches a month) using nothing but good onpage SEO.

    In context links from pages with proper Title tags, headings, alt text, tags and related keywords are very effective.

    Naturally, internal links will only take you so far. I would still focus on onpage stuff first. Take some time to learn it.

      Yes that are important for the page means that stands for the getting the traffic to the site and also to get visitors that creates the PR of the site also best for the profits by site.

    yes mate, building backlinks is a must to increase the pr of any site.

    but wht u need to concentrate is, how u r building them.

    focus on the quality rather than quantity. and having excess baclinks can also lead to spam.

    On-page SEO is as important as having off-page backlinks. Better start backlinking in the site itself. Interlink URLs with each other and provide a sitemap if possible.

    Internal links do carry some weight but you shouldn't worry too much about building them. Depending on your site architecture good internal linking can just naturally happen. Spend more time on getting backlinks.
