Adding "the" in front of the keyword....

The .com, .net, and .info are all taken. The top spot for this search is of course the exact match domain but only has 2 links going to it. Is it that much of an uphill battle if I wanted to go after the keyword with "the" infront of it?

With only two links coming in to it, you should easily be able to surpass the exact match. We have many clients that do not have any keywords in their domain name that outrank the exact matches.

nope. exact match > not exact match. Of course there are different scenarios to this.

If the exact match doesn't build any backlinks to it then any SEO optimized site can easily outrank it whether it has a keyword rich domain or not. But if the exact match domain on position 1 decides to build backlinks to their site, then get ready for some competition.

Have you tried going for a hyphenated variation?
