Hello Everyone,

I wanted to start a thread about how to determine the competition level of the top 10 results on Google for a keyword..

Some people say to look for 3 sites with a Pr of 3 or less.

Some people say if you have less than "30,000" in quotes you good to go.

Some say that just check the... allintitle:keyword..if less than 10,000 your good to go.

So what do you do to check the competion of a keyword in the top 10 results ??

A question that will arise mostly opinionated answers.

So i'll just help by saying, never listen to these two:

Some people say if you have less than "30,000" in quotes you good to go.

Some say that just check the... allintitle:keyword..if less than 10,000 your good to go.
The competitors PR, backlink profile, anchor text saturation and on page optimization (meta, h1, title, etc) are a good place to start.

    All my opinions of course

Yes that is true..I know that it all comes down to the top 10 on page one..I use to do my keyword research by looking for keywords that had "30,000" or less but found out down the road that it did not matter it's whats on page one and page one only that matters.

One reason is that you can have a keyword that has 5 mil results in quotes but the competition on page one is weak..so it would be easy to rank for that keyword..on the other hand you could have a keyword that has only 10,000 results in quotes but never be able to rank for it because the top 10 results are strong.

Yes, that happens sometimes but as said in economics, "a few exceptions to the rule does not change the rule". On average, the more the total websites competing for a keyword/keyword phrase, the more competitive Page 1 will also become.

To me, one should not just use one yardstick but combine many relevant variables i.e total competing websites, page 1 competition etc. to arrive at a decision.

Looking at your competition solely on the first page of Google results...

I think the one area that will show you the most accurate assessment is a spreadsheet created from the results taken from opensiteexplorer.com (OSE) for each of the variables listed. Then compare your site's stats, and that will give you an idea how hard or easy it will be to break into the top ten.

Page Authority, Domain Authority, and Anchor Text Links with KW Strings are the three major factors to look at when determining competitive stats using OSE.
