Question regarding niche research

I have a question regarding niche research. When I am researching new niches, very often the first google results are amazon etc. When I check pagerank and number of backlinks, they might not even be too high, like pagerank one and a backlink count below 100. With other pages I would say, that is beatable, but I have a hunch that places like amazon would he hard to beat?!?

Could someone please clarify?

Thanks in advance!

Amazon is an authorized website and it has millions of backlinks. And if even the pages you check have low pagerank and a few words, they have a lot of backlinks and its the reason for their high ranking for most keywords is Google.

Most of the time Amazon is #1 for the keyword purely based off their authotity domain name, they've got no links to that page and most of the time (In some research I've been doing) the page isn't optimized in the slightest for the keywords. Only time will tell if you'll be able to beat them easily, but for their inner-pages/product-pages, of course you can beat them

Thank you for your replies, so you still have to differentiate between different amazon pages? If they don´t have any pagerank and very few backlinks, there is hope? :-)

So far I only have been able to rank for keywords that didn´t have the exact product name in them and were somewhat generic.
