Pay per click (PPC) newbie

Hello Warriors:

Complete 100% but VERY eager to learn Newbie here.

I am currently working on my first ever Niche site (and it is EXCITING). As well as working on my Niche site I am slowly learning the need for back links and SEO to compete in the major search engines. Because as we all know, even the best site, if it gets 0 visits will not make money.

One thing that i came across recently when listening to a podcast was the topic of Pay per Click to drive traffic to a site. However from all of my research I have unfortunately learned nothing (or feel like) about PPC.

Is this a good strategy? What does this type of traffic direction cost on average? How does someone get involved in this if it is a good tactic? What are some good sites to find a good PPC service?

I kind of feel like i am wandering blind on this subject but am reaching out to this highly recommended forum for any information possible.

Thank you all in advance for any information

Inlecture.

If you're looking to drive traffic to your website, try the website I'm just going to share. Its basically a free article submission and translation website. You submit your articles and the website automatically translates it to 56 different languages of the world. What is the result? Your article is reviewed by a diverse audience and you get 56 additional one-way links to each article submission.
    Its great. Here it is:

If you are looking for good PPC networks, you can try Adwords, Bidvertiser and Adbrite and usually the average BID for them is $0.05. But if you can optimize your website for organic traffic, its better and free.

Advertiser side, I'd suggest 7search and adwords, but it's really all about what you're selling and what you know.

Hi orvn, for this niche site I am focusing on home theater equipment ( more precise but for now I am opting to leave the details hidden )

For what I know i would say that I am on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being an expert i would put myself at a 2 - 3 level. I understand market research, building my site, and getting everything set up with affiliate links.

Where my knowledge falls short is on advertising and getting traffic to my site, right now i am working on an SEO system to get organic traffic to my site but was intreagued when i heard about a pay per click system.

Would anyone have any hints as to a good resource for beginners to pick up some good solid information as a kick start?

Pay per click advertising is an online program where Advertiser's Ads are displayed on your website and you are paid for every valid click on any of such ads on your website. These Adverts are normally hosted by a company which serve the ads to your site.

Would someone be willing to give bit more information on this? I was under the impression that pay per click was a system where companies brought me traffic and I paid them per unique visitor to my site?

Have I been completely wrong and they pay me????

No you are right ppc is an advertising platform where you the advertiser pays a certain amount of money in return for 1 click.

There re generally 2 different platforms for PPC advertising.

The first is a search network such as Google. The sponsored ads down the right and across the top are PPC ads. The advertiser will have written each of these ads for an ad group which consists of a small number of tightly focussed keywords that they want their ads to be displayed for when someone searches for one of the keywords from the Google search bar.

The 2nd type of PPC is the content or Display Network.

The display network works in a similar way to the search network however instead of showing your ads whenever someone searches for your keyword, the advertising platform (e.g. Google) will look at the keywords you have targeted and place your ad on sites that it considers to be relevant to those keywords.

As a general rule using PPC on the search network should yield much better results because you can target people much more specifically.

The website owners that allow Google to put ads on their site are signed up to adsense so part of the price you pay for the click goes to them for allowing ads to be placed on their site and Google takes the lions share.

Hope that makes things a bit clearer for you

No worries, an important piece of information if whether or not you're targeting a local audience: are you selling these speakers online, or locally? That's good that you have a high yeild conversion product.

Here, I'll be giving you some relative examples of click price.

With Facebook, the name of the game is targetting. You're paying more than usual to ensure that you hit an incredibly accurate audience. If you really know your audience, choose this. Remember, FB CPC is expensive. Let's say 50¢/click
          See my link below.

Then again, Adwords CPC is expensive too, if you use it wrong. This can mean the difference between 5¢/c and $4/c. Quality ratio is a big player.
          See my link below.

Other, simpler good cost-effective alternatives include:
          Adbrite, 20¢/c (easy to use)
          Infolinks 20¢/c
7Search 5¢/c (dirt cheap and still effective)

Forget bidvertiser and that thing that starts with a k, konomitu or something, I forgot the name.

Remember, all the price examples I gave are relative to one another, from one of my ad campaigns with approximately the same reach and keywords for each network.

Based on your definitions, Facebook ads do not belong in either category.

Thank you for all of your help everyone, i have been learning TONS.

One thing that i am hesitant on though is signing up for PPC servies without knowing the business in / out and backwards, and ending up bidding too high, or too low and not getting any traffic.

Or bidding on the incorrect keywords to get the traffic required.

This is some exciting, but newby dangerous territory.

Sorry I should have been clearer. When I refer to Google I am using that as a the base for PPC seen as how it is the largest and most popular. I should have used the term network when referring to the search or content / display.

There is certainly not just one platform, there are literally hundreds about, some great, some not so great.

    Google
    Yahoo
    Bing
    Facebook
    Linked in
    AOL
    Adbrite
    7Search
    Blacklabel
    AdXpansion

    etc...

and as Orvn has already said, it is all about quality. Particularly on Google. The thing you will find however is that the bulk of PPC platforms are essentially just content networks and not all niches work on the content network. With search engine based PPC platforms you're ads are displayed along with the search results which makes the traffic so much more targeted and qualified for you than the display network does and then if you continue on with this logic and want to advertise on search engines and traffic volume is important then Google really is an essential platform to be advertising on.

This is not to say that the content network is no good. We had been running an account on Google for about a year at a CPC of around $35, recently we brwqnched out onto an adult advertising network and our CPC has dropped to $12 while the number of conversions has risen substantially.

It is all about finding the right place for your ads! There really is no right or wrong answer when it comes to online advertising!

With regards to Facebook, I would most definitely consider it similar to the display network. People don't log onto facebook thinking they want to buy something. It is clearly pot luck if someone clicks on your ad - just look at the CTR compared to Google search network.

so i think if i were to persue PPC services, i will need to do some more research before i take the plung.

The use of Search engine services (Yahoo / Bing / Google) sound great, my issues start before i can even begin because i dont even know where i would sign up or get registered for this type of service.

With a service that promotes my site on Yahoo or Bing or both (arent they joined now?) where would one typically go?

Thank you again everyone for all of the help, i have definatly learned a ton and will continue to learn, grow, and adapt.

id suggest you start with organic search engine traffic, just build backlinks even if it dosent give you traffic you get the experience, if your not willing to do that, just take a week; sit back and watch this section of the forum and read everything you can. If not you will lead yourself directly into a money pit and will lose all ambition for internet marketing it takes alot of skill to work ppc, but by far is the most profitable.

I must say i agree with your statement, it is good to understand process A and how you got results before jumping to process B.

I am already blindly feeling myway though the cave that is SEO but PPC seems like the way to go according to many people on the forum. Right now i think it may be best to get a "teacher" or "trainer" who could give me to finer points to PPC and what pit falls to watchout for.

Would anyone have any suggestions of a good trainer / service for this?

The unfortunate Truth about TRAFFIC IS,its not created equal. QUALITY of traffic... meaning to get a buying traffic (what you want from what's out there) and drive them to your site.

Learning that my fried is the trick of the century...

You need to spend some money on your education, because it takes skills and know how, and a great deal of Clarity of how the web behaves and interacts to get good at driving buying traffic to your site.

We can share an idea here and an idea there, but without a good foundation, you will join the ranks of newbies, buying every offer insight that sounds and promises the world. Even if you can somehow drive some kind of traffic to your site, another challenge you will have is YOUR SITE can convert to a sale?

Another Skill you must understand, otherwise traffic driving effort would be fruitless and can get you out of the game..

So GAME ON... expect longer delays and more challenges to bring in the first buck..
