Which is best tool to check rank in SERPs

Hi Folks,

What tool do you use to see where a site ranks in SERPs?

The one I use is not accurate at all. On one site, in real time search (no quotes), I rank #7 page 1. The tool I have been using doesn't show it at all.

On another, in real Google search, I'm on first page #1, tool says I'm 3 69.

What's the difference? Is there a more accurate tool?

JD

I use SEO Elite if I really want to check them. Mostly because you can just input the term/website once and it will keep a chart to see the progression.

Isn't that against the Google terms of service?

Most of those Tools are developed using a Developers API.

Google webmaster tools. Shows you not only where you rank, but how often you have that rank, plus your CTR. And, it will likely include a few keywords you're ranking for you had not thought of.

I received this PM so I'll elaborate on my above post for those not familiar with Google webmaster tools:

"Can you put Google webmaster tools into a WP Blog post?"

      This misunderstands the tool.

      Here is how it works:

Assume your website is the Warrior Forum. In your Google webmaster account you say warriorforum.com is your website.

Google then gives you some code to include on the home page. This is to verify that you in fact own this website, since only the website owner will be able to include code into a page.

You are then done with Google code. There is nothing to include in blog posts, pages, or anything else.

What will happen is that Google will start collecting information about your site (all pages in your site not just the home page), and Google will tell you what search terms are being used to find your site and what your ranking is.

      For example:

Google will probably say a popular search term is: warrior forum and that your SERP is #1 with a 100% click thru rate.

*** Google will also tell you how many times that keyword was searched on the last 30 days. G will also let you know if your CTR and SERP are going up or down.

There could be hundreds of keywords listed. Another, for our example, could be: make money from home. I'm going to make this up, but the stats could be:

      550 searches
SERP ranking #14 and going up
      CTR 3% and going down

      Why this is good.

Maybe you are checking your search ranking for 'warrior forum' and it did not cross your mind to check for 'make money from home'.

Google just gave you a keyword phrase you're already being listed for and perhaps want to focus on to improve your ranking.

      Maybe I don't understand Webmaster Tools (OK, I don't).

But if it shows Avg Position as, say, 1.9 - isn't that good? Shouldn't my site be on the first page of a google search for that keyword?

Problem is, it isn't. Isn't on the first 10 pages. Why does Webmaster tools tell me it's avg position is 1.9?

      Roger.

Roger, I had a similar problem. The issue was that Google initially "groups" all of its reporting data into one value. That can skew results. So you need to select the option to only see web results.

        For example:

website is #1 in Google images but #30 in web search for a term might show a ranking of 7 because that is the overall ranking.

Choose to only see web stats to see just the #30 web SERP ranking.

[edited - I found it, (but I wish I could include mobile)]

That makes sense because I know many of my images do rank well (for no benefit, I'm sure)

          thanks.

I am sorry but all most all of the serps ranking are not accurate from webmaster tools. I've checked my sites for the position they've listed in the tools but nowwhere to be seen.

I use IBP when checking SERPs. The results being provided with this tool gives you the same result if you do manual check of SERP.

Nowadays there are many tools available online for checking the ranking of a site for keywords relevant to a site, like search engine ranking checker, Market Samurai, Traffic Travis, Ranktracker or Wordtracker which no doubt is useful for this purpose and these works.

I have used Traffic Travis and that is good. My favorite rank checker is the one in SEOLinkvine, it has a longitudinal graph so you can track rises and falls. Unfortunately it is the only good thing about SEOLV (sorry a bit harsh). I have this Firefox addon rankChecker from SEO Book, but for the life of me I can not get it to work for me, reinstalls etc. So trraffic travis would be your best bet. Would love to see a ranking tracking tool like SEOLV outside of SEOLV.

I recently tested RankTracker by Link-Asistant.com, RankChecker by SEOBook and Advanced Web Ranking.

Of those 3, the only one which gave correct results was RankTracker. Both Rankchecker and Advanced Web Ranking were way off and in the case of the latter, that is not ok, since it costs a good sum.

RankTracker however, doesn't have that good of a user interface, it's quite ugly in fact, but I will probably still buy it soon.
