Would you try to rank for this?

Hey guys, I have a particular keyword I'm interested in ranking for.

There's not too much SEO competition (only around 2,500 listings on Google for this keyword), and it gets about 3,000 searches a month.

The problem is, when I use Market Samurai to check out the competition, the top 10 sites ranking on Google for this keyword are some super authority sites.

Some of the authority sites have 14 year domain age, are PR5's.

BUT... most aren't optimized on-page well for it and the backlinks to the actual page are all less than 100, except for 1 site.

Would this be worth ranking for to get #1 on Google?

Is it possible to beat out these freaky authority sites with insanes amounts of indexed content and backlinks to their domain, high PR and all that.

If the keyword is extremely targeted toward your product, service, or affiliate offer, it might make sense; however, 3000 search per month is tiny. One thing I'd recommend you do if you have the means is to run a google adwords campaign targetting that keyword to see what kind of traffic you can expect. Of course you will get more traffic organically than with ppc, but at least you'll have an idea of what it would mean to be #1 for a day before you go through the work.

Great call. I like the Adwords idea.

While it doesn't get much searches, it's for a niche site with the keyword "cure" in it. So I know the people that I'd be getting are very targeted and are interested in a cure (the solution I'm providing).

A couple things that jumped out at me as I was reading:

    - 3k search a month, is that broad or exact? Even if it's exact, it's doable, but it's not that great of a search volume. Unless of course you can get really high EPC from the site (say your promoting a cpa offer that pays out $40) - then it's definitely worth it.

    - From what it sounds like, the results that are on the 1st page are for inner pages, not root domains. Many time, if you're trying to rank your root domain for the keyword it's gonna be easy to outrank inner pages (with the exception of sites like amazon that have huge authority)

So even though those SITES have great stats, the PAGES themselves might not. So ranking will be much easier than you might think at first.

Try to grab yourself either the EMD or a matured domain for fastest ranking.

    Good luck!

      Thanks, great advice!

By the way, what do you mean by grab myself a "EMD" or matured domain? Don't follow you here.

Totally agree with "Daniel7rusu" on this, I'd buy an EMD or (Exact Match Domain) and rank it for the route domain with the target keyword and a secondary keyword. If the authority sites are like Wikihow or Wikipedia it will take a few months, but with constant back links you'll be fine.

That's not much competition though for a nice number of searches, what are you using exact or phrase to research?

I put "quotes" around my keywords to find the competition, so exact.
