Check your WP Privacy Settings on New Sites

Just a heads up.

Yesterday, I created 3 new sites on HG using Fantastico and WP 3.0.3.

The default Privacy setting was *Search Engines Blocked*

This has happened in the past, but not recently...

Fortunately, this version tells you that the search engines are blocked, but be sure you UNblock them!

Hm usually it's asked during the installation process if you wish to turn on or off SE's from reaching you

It is when you do a manual installation (and maybe with other applications), but not with Fantastico.

One would have to ask why WP would do this. I wonder if there is a reason behind it, considering initially the default was to block SEs and was later changed to unblock, and now is back to blocking SEs. Strange! (Darn, now I'll have to google to see if I can find out why - lol).

Yes, but why did they change it back and forth, that is the issue. And actually I prefer to get indexed when there is little content on a WP site so the ball gets rolling quicker. With a WP site I can usually get it indexed in 4 - 48 hours.

It's actually not WordPress that sets that setting on blocking search engines. It's the application (fantastico de luxe) that is set up that way.

      Hmmm. Interesting...

I also realized after thinking about this that these were the first sites that actually installed at 3.0.3

My previous installations most recently, had to be upgraded to 3.0.3 after the install.

Yes, fantastico de luxe is usually late with getting the latest version of WordPress. And they choose the settings WordPress gets installed with, the ones you usually select when you do it manually, like blocking the search engines for example.

I agree, Chris. I also install WordPress manually. It takes as much time as doing it via a script, you just need to know the exact steps, that's all.

Yes, they are lazy. Once you know how to install Wordpress, it's no more difficult than changing a light bulb. And it takes 15 minutes of your life to learn.

LOL In theory, I agree with what you are saying... and I certainly have the skills to do a manual install. Unfortunately, I have never been able to get the WP files uploaded in less than an hour with LOTS of gnashing of teeth... I am pretty sure it is a problem related to my internet connection, judging from other issues I have observed.

That said, at this point in my life I pick and choose my battles.

For right now, using Fantastico does not seem to have a negative impact on my site building, so I use it. At the point that I feel it is a hindrance, I'll re-evaluate.

I have made the decision that when it comes to WP and new sites, in my case, competently finished and ready for content is better than perfect and unfinished. ;-)

Needless to say we all need to decide what is right for ourselves and our businesses.

I will however admit that I haven't been able to apply *Finished is better than Perfect* to ALL of my endeavors.

I am still totally incapable of stitching with silk without carefully stranding it... LOL

I use the file manager in my cpanel and upload the zipfile which I then extract. Much faster then uploading the files through ftp one by one (just a tip )

      But I agree with your

I'm not sure it's just fantastico that's doing it. I've noticed that it has happened to all the sites I've upgraded since the latest version of WP was released - using automatic upgrade from within the admin area.

Interesting... I hadn't noticed it happening when I upgraded.

I just upgraded one of my other sites using automatic upgrade from within the admin area and it didn't have the Privacy setting changed.

I wonder what the pattern actually is. This is one of those things that is going to bug me! LOLOL
